QU Softball Drops Doubleheader to UC Riverside

With the losses, the Bobcats move to 6-9 on the season.
In the first game, Quinnipiac was able to strike first. Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) led the game off with a double to left, then Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) grounded-out, moving Magana to third. Rebecca Drake (Whiting, New Jersey) was able to hit a sac-fly to center field, driving in Magana to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
The Highlanders would tack on six runs before he Bobcats responded. In the top of the third inning, Magana started the rally with a one-out single. Two batters later, Drake laced a two-out double to left, driving Magana in. Keala Cordeiro (Huntington Beach, California) followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-3. Lexi Courtney (Scappoose, Oregon) singled to put runners on first and second with two outs, then Erin Larsen (Kissimmee, Florida) singled to drive in Cordeiro and make the score, 6-4.
However, the Highlanders would add six more runs before the game would go final to seal the Bobcats loss.
The Bobcats were able to bounce back for a big win against the Highlanders later in the day.
Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) was locked into a pitching showdown with Anessa Cepeda, with neither pitcher allowing a run until UC Riverside was able to plate two in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Bobcats answered back with a run of their own after Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) hit a one-out single in the top of the fifth. Taylor Troyan (Boca Raton, Florida) was able to move Heimbach to second after she grounded out, then after Magana worked a walk, Czaja singled to left to score Heimbach and make the game 2-1.
After a stalemate from both sides in the sixth, Quinnipiac had one more chance to tie or take the lead in the game. Rachel Marchuk (San Ramon, California) got a pinch-hit double to start the inning, then Heimbach followed with a triple to tie the game at two. Two batters later Heimbach scored on a wild pitch to give Quinnipiac a 3-2 lead. The Bobcats tacked on one more after Drake knocked a two-out RBI double to right to make it 4-2.
Quinnipiac surrendered two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, tying the game and sending it to extra innings, where the Highlanders would win it in the eighth.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Friday, March 17, when the Bobcats begin play in the Cal State Northridge Tournament. Quinnipiac will take on the University of Northern Colorado at 11 a.m. pacific (2 p.m.) eastern and Bryant at 4 p.m. pacific (7 p.m. eastern).
