LEXINGTON, Virginia - Quinnipiac baseball fell to Virginia Military Institute, 9-5, on Saturday afternoon at Gray Minor Stadium. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 6-6 on the season.
Senior shortstop Matthew Batten (Shelton, CT) led the way for Quinnipiac, going 3-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored. Freshman Evan Vulgamore (Bow, MA) also chipped in with two hits of his own in the loss, including a ninth-inning solo home run - the first of his Quinnipiac career.
Taylor Luciani (Berlin, CT) went 3.0 innings in his second start of the season, giving up seven hits and five runs (just one earned). The junior has only given up one earned run in 5.0 innings on the hill so far this year. Nick Paasch (Tolland, CT) went the next 3.0 innings, giving up two hits and one run to go along with five strikeouts. Paasch has now given up just two earned runs in 6.1 innings. Mike DellaMedaglia (Somers, NY) threw the final inning for the Bobcats, giving up just one hit and no runs.
VMI scored three runs in the second inning, two in the third inning and one in the fourth inning to take an early 6-0 lead.
The Bobcats then plated two runs in the top of the seventh frame, as Derek Kasperzyk (Killingworth, CT) and Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, NY) came around to score and make it 6-2. Kasperzyk first scored on a throwing error by the Keydets catcher, then Batten ripped an RBI single to center field to help Quinnipiac cut the lead to four runs.
VMI grabbed three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, extending its lead to 9-2. The Bobcats didn't go quietly, however, as they put up three more runs in the top of the ninth.
Vulgamore kicked off the ninth-inning comeback attempt with a solo home run to cut the lead to 9-3. The home run to left field was the first blast of the freshman's collegiate career. Batten then hit another RBI single up the middle to drive in Liam Scafariello (Southington, CT), then later scored himself on a wild pitch to cut the lead to just four runs.
VMI was ultimately able to silence the Bobcats' rally, evening the three-game series 1-1. Quinnipiac had five runs on nine hits in total, leaving 11 men on base.
The Bobcats and Keydets square off again tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Lexington.
