LEXINGTON, Virginia - Quinnipiac baseball recorded 13 hits on Sunday afternoon at Gray Minor Stadium, but fell to Virginia Military Institute by the final score of 13-7. The Bobcats fall to 6-7 overall in 2017 with the loss.
Quinnipiac's offense was led by a four-RBI performance from sophomore first basemen Liam Scafariello (Southington, CT). Scafariello went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with three runs scored, and blasted his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the loss.
Matthew Batten (Shelton, CT) and Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, NY) each chipped in with three hits of their own. Batten went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and Palladino was 3-for-5 with a run scored. Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, TN) also recorded two hits and an RBI.
Quinnipiac got on the board first in the top half of the first inning, as Scafariello singled to left-center field to plate Batten and make it 1-0. Scafariello scored Quinnipiac's second run himself, taking home on a double steal.
The sophomore drove in two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, singling down the left field line to bring in Batten and Palladino for the Bobcats' second and third runs of the game. In the same inning, Brian Moskey (Higganum, CT) drove in a run on a groundout, and Nelson singled through the right side of the infield to plate Scafariello for Quinnipiac's fourth and fifth runs of the day.
Scafariello homered in the seventh, a solo blast, to make it 11-7, but VMI plated two more runs to extend the lead in the bottom half of the inning. He now has 10 RBI's in his first 12 games as a Bobcat.
Chris Enns (Canton, CT) was impressive in 3.1 innings of relief on the mound for Quinnipiac, allowing no hits while striking out three VMI batters. Christian Nicolosi (Stony Point, NY) went 1.2 innings in his third start of the season on the hill for the Bobcats, giving up seven hits and four earned runs with a strikeout.
Wyatt Hamilton (Falmouth, MA) also got three outs out of the bullpen allowing just one earned run, and Andrew Workman (Pound Ridge, NY) threw the last two full innings - giving up two earned runs with two strikeouts.
