HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac freshman guards Mikey Dixon (New Castle, Del.) and Peter Kiss (New York, N.Y.) were unanimous selections to the 2016-17 MAAC All-Rookie Team in a vote of the conference's coaches, it was announced today by the MAAC office.
Dixon and Kiss were joined by Rider's Stevie Jordan, Canisius' Malik Johnson, and Iona's E.J. Crawford on the five-player MAAC All-Rookie Team. The Rookie of the Year will be announced on Friday at the league's annual awards show in Albany.
Dixon (16.8 ppg) and Kiss (13.3 ppg) combine to average 30.1 points per game this season. Only three schools in the nation have a freshman combination averaging more: Kentucky (Malik Monk, De'Aaron Fox), Saint John's (Shamorie Ponds, Marcus LoVett) and UCLA (T.J. Leaf, Lonzo Ball). Dixon's 16.8 points also ranks him eighth in the nation among freshmen in scoring and sixth among all classes in the MAAC (fourth in conference games at 18.1 ppg), while Kiss ranks 18th in all games and 13th in MAAC contests (15.1 ppg).
Quinnipiac's two freshmen have also been regulars among the conference's weekly award winners. The duo has combined to win the MAAC Rookie of the Week award nine times (Dixon five, Kiss four) with the final award of the year pending this afternoon. Quinnipiac has had the MAAC Rookie of the Week in each of the last seven weeks and in all eight weeks of full MAAC competition.
Dixon will easily break the Quinnipiac record for highest scoring average for a freshman at the Division I level, surpassing the 13.0 ppg standard set by Rob Monroe in 2001-02. The all-divisions school record is 16.7 ppg, set in 1979-80 by Frank Berretta at the Division II level, which Dixon can break if he maintains his current scoring average after the postseason. Dixon also has 504 total points this season, one shy of moving into the top 10 on Quinnipiac's single-season list for all classes, and just 22 shy of moving into the top five.
Quinnipiac will open MAAC tournament play against Niagara on Thursday at 5 p.m. In the first meeting at Niagara on January 2, Dixon had 23 points, including the game-winning jumper with 22.4 seconds left, in an 81-78 win. In the rematch on Feb. 4, Kiss had 23 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists, which remain his personal-bests in all three categories, as he nearly had the first Quinnipiac triple-double since James Feldeine in 2009-10.
