PRINCETON, New Jersey - Kate MacKenzie (Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored the game-winning goal 6:34 into the third overtime period on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink, lifting No. 10 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey past No. 8 Princeton, 3-2, in Game 1 of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals best-of-three series.
The goal, MacKenzie's seventh of the season, came on a wrist shot from the slot on a 2-on-1 opportunity. Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) skated down ice with the puck, then delivered a perfect pass to the freshman defender out in front of the net, and MacKenzie did the rest.
Quinnipiac, the ECAC Hockey Tournament's No. 5 seed, improves to 21-8-6 so far in 2016-17 with the come-from-behind victory. Princeton, the No. 4 seed in the conference, falls to 18-9-3. The Bobcats take a 1-0 series lead over Princeton, needing just one win over the next two days to move on to the ECAC Hockey Semifinals.
Senior goaltender Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) made a career-high 59 saves in the win. She finished just 10 saves short of Quinnipiac's single-game record of 69 total saves, made in a combined effort by Mel Courtemach (42 saves) and Catherine Lapare (27 saves) on Jan. 8, 2002 at Brown. The individual record for most saves in a game belongs to Victoria Castellon, who made 63 stops on Nov. 2, 2001 vs. New Hampshire.
Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) and Raquel Pennoyer (Rehoboth, Massachusetts) also each scored in the win for the Bobcats, grabbing a pair of third-period goals in under a minute to force overtime.
The first period featured end-to-end action between both teams, as Quinnipiac totaled 16 shots on goal to Princeton's eight. The Bobcats had a few good chances to break the tie, but Princeton goaltender Steph Neatby stood strong in net.
Senior captain Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) and senior Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) almost got the Bobcats on the board just 4:03 in, chipping at the puck in front of the crease - but Neatby was there to keep things scoreless. Pennoyer almost broke the tie with 2:03 left in the period, poking at the loose puck in front of the left side of the Tigers' net. Once again, Princeton was able to clear the puck from the doorstep.
The Tigers scored the game's first goal just 4:44 into the second stanza, converting on a 2-on-1 chance to make it 1-0 Princeton. Karlie Lund grabbed the puck along the boards, carried it toward net, then delivered a cross-ice pass to Carly Bullock who burried the one-timer. Bullock now has 29 points with the goal, while Lund (43 points) and Molly Contini (29 points) each earned assists on the play.
Senior defenseman Kelsey Koelzer made it 2-0 Princeton with 4:45 remaining in the second period. She collected the puck in front of the Tigers' net, carried it the length of the ice, then deked out in front of the Bobcats' goal and fired a wrist shot in to make it 2-0 Tigers.
Quinnipiac then came marching back, scoring twice in just 49 seconds to tie the game. Turner grabbed the Bobcats' first goal of the postseason with 18:17 left in the third period, getting a stick on an unclaimed puck out in front of Princeton's net to cut the deficit to one goal. Kenzie Lancaster (Waxhaw, North Carolina) and Kenzie Prater (Hudson, Wisconsin) were each credited with assists on the goal. The goal is the assistant captain's 11th of the season and 28th of her career, while Lancaster now has eight assists and Prater has nine.
The Bobcats then tied it up 2-2 just moments later, as Pennoyer netted her fourth goal of the year. The puck came loose near the doorstep on the Bobcats' rush, and the junior put it through Neatby's legs to make things eve. Samoskevich earned an assist on the play.
Princeton had a chance to end it less than four minutes into the overtime frame, as Morgan Sly one-timed a pass from across the ice toward net. Rossman was there again, making a huge pad save to keep the game going.
Back-and-forth the two goaltenders went. Rossman (59 saves) and Neatby (60 saves) combined for 119 stops in the first game of the series.
MacKenzie finally sent the Bobcats home with a 1-0 series lead, scoring on a goal assisted by Samoskevich. The goal is her seventh of the season. With two assists on the night, Samoskevich now has 10 goals and 19 helpers this year.
Quinnipiac ended up with 63 shots, while Princeton had 61. The Tigers won 51 of 99 faceoffs in total. The game took three hours and 45 minutes in total.
