
QU Baseball Splits Doubleheader vs. UTSA, Completing Comeback Win in Game 2

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Liam Scafariello (Southington, CT) belted a home run in each game on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field, as Quinnipiac Baseball split a doubleheader vs. the University of Texas San Antonio. The Bobcats fell 12-1 in Game 1, then topped UTSA 8-7 (12 innings) in Game 2.
Scafariello, a sophomore transfer from San Jacinto College, now has three home runs in Quinnipiac's first three games so far this season, going 4-for-13 so far in 2017 with three RBI's and three runs scored. Brian Moskey (Higganum, CT) delivered the Bobcats' game-winning RBI single in the 12th inning of Game 2.
Quinnipiac now moves to 2-1 on the 2017 season, while the University of Texas San Antonio falls to 1-2.
Game 1
Scafariello accounted for Quinnipiac's only run on offense, belting a solo home run to left field in the top of the third inning. The home run, which came on a 3-2 count, made it 5-1 UTSA, at the time. Scafariello led the Bobcats with two hits on the afternoon.
Anthony Cruz (Burlington, MA) had the only other Quinnipiac extra-base hit in the first game, grabbing a double. Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, NY), Joseph Burns (Shelton, CT), Brian Moskey (Higganum, CT), Dylan Lutz (Denver, CO), Julius Saporito (Manalapan, NJ), Anthony Cruz (Burlington, MA) and Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, CT) all chipped in with a single of their own.
Alex Vargas (New York, NY) got the Game 1 start for Quinnipiac, going 1.1 innings and giving up four hits and five runs. Mike DellaMedaglia (Somers, NY) threw the next 2.0 innings out of the bullpen, giving up just two hits and two runs while striking out two. David Longstreeth (Hatfield, MA) then went 2.2 innings, giving up three hits and three runs with two punch outs, and Greg Egan threw the last 2.0 frames, giving up two runs over five hits while striking out two.
UTSA had 12 runs on 14 hits, while the Bobcats tallied one run on nine hits.
Game 2
Moskey, Saporito and Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, TN) each had a multi-hit game in the night cap of the double header. Palladino, Scafariello, Burns, Matthew Batten (Shelton, CT) and Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, MA) all chipped in with a hit.
Quinnipiac used six total pitchers in Game 2. Blake DeCarr (Foxboro, MA) went 3.0 innings, giving up just three hits and one earned run in his first collegiate career start, striking out two in the process. Brandon Shileikis (North Dighton, MA) threw the next 4.0 innings in relief, surrendering just one run (unearned). Mike Davis (Sandy Hook, CT) got two outs on the mound in the eighth inning, giving up two runs (both unearned) and just two hits. Nick Paasch (Tolland, CT) got one out, a strikeout, then Wyatt Hamilton (Falmouth, MA) threw a full inning giving up one hit and one run. Andrew Workman (Pound Ridge, NY) went the next three scoreless innings to earn the win, including getting out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the 11th.
The Bobcats scored two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two again in the eighth and the ninth innings. Nelson doubled in Moskey in the fourth inning, then later scored Quinnipiac's second run himself after advancing to home on a double steal. Scafariello's home run came in the fifth inning of Game 2, then Gibson singled to score Moskey and Saporito singled to score Vulgamore in the eighth - making it 5-4 Bobcats.
The Roadrunner's scored twice in the bottom half of the eighth to retake the lead, but Quinnipiac would answer back once again. Joe Burns singled in the ninth and Batten scored on a throwing error to tie things 6-6, then Vulgamore walked to score Burns later in the inning an the Bobcats' again grabbed the lead.
UTSA would score another run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, but Quinnipiac won it in the 12th. Batten got on base when he was hit by a pitch, then Moskey delivered the game-winning RBI single up the middle.
Quinnipiac is slated to play the fourth and final game of the series vs. UTSA tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 19, at Roadrunner Field at 11:30 a.m.
