No. 14 QU Men's Ice Hockey Falls To No. 2 Boston University, 3-2

HAMDEN, Conn. – In front of 3,430 fans for its home opener, the No. 14 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team fell short in overtime to No. 2 Boston University, 3-2, in overtime. Sophomore Alex Whelan (Ramsey, New Jersey) started the scoring in the first period, and Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) kept the Bobcats in the lead through the second. Freshman goalie Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) made his regular-season debut for the Bobcats, totaling 31 saves in the Bobcats' first game on home ice.

13:49 1st period (QU 1-0) Alex Whelan scored his second goal in as many games. Whelan received a pass at the far blue line and roofed the puck,blocker side, over Boston University goaltender Jake Oettinger.
3:39 2nd period (Tied 1-1) Boston University's Patrick Harper took advantage of a 4-on-3 power play and flipped one over Petruzzelli. Petruzzelli made an initial save, but a scrum in the crease prevented him from recovering in time.
13:38 2nd period (QU 2-1) Odeen Tufto won a battle in front of the Bobcats' bench and fed Landon Smith. Smith then handed the puck to Bo Pieper, who was streaking up the center of the ice. Pieper wristed a shot low, glove-side of Oettinger to put the Bobcats back in the lead.
0:53 3rd period (Tied 2-2) Patrick Harper scored his second of the game to tie it. Harper carried the puck in close from the left circle before his shot ricochetted off a Quinnipiac defenseman in the crease and into the net.
4:19 OT (BU 3-2) In a scrum in front of the Bobcats net, Shane Bowers punched the puck through traffic and sent it past the pads of Petruzzelli to give the Terriers the 3-2 win in extra time.

The Bobcats will host Vermont on Saturday, October 14th for a 4 p.m. Parents Weekend matinee game. The game can be found televised on ESPN3.

NOTES
- Freshman Keith Petruzzelli made his first regular season start for the Bobcats. He made 31 saves in his regular-season collegiate debut, most notably one coming 1:16 into overtime when he made a huge pad save against a soaring Boston University skater down the center of the zone to keep the game tied in overtime.
- Alex Whelan scored his second goal in as many games to open the scoring for the Bobcats in the first period and had a team-high four shots on net during the game.
- Bo Pieper recorded his first goal of the season, and 22nd of his career, in the second period. Pieper was also the Bobcats' top face-off player, winning 14-of-25 draws.
- Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) picked his first point of the season and the 98th of his career. Smith's assist was also the 60th of his career, making him the 29th player in program history, and the 18th at the NCAA Division I level, to reach the 60-assist mark for his career.
- Odeen Tufto assisted on the Bobcats' second goal of the game, giving him his second point in as many games.
