QU Volleyball Falls To UMass Lowell

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to UMass Lowell on Tuesday evening at Burt Kahn Gymnasium, falling by set scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-19.
With the loss, the Bobcats slip to 5-4 on the season, dropping their third straight after a 5-1 start. UMass Lowell, which split a pair of 3-2 matches with Quinnipiac last year, improves to 5-4 with the win.
Freshman setter Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J. - pictured) had 29 assists to pace the Quinnipiac offense, while junior middle hitter Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) had the best day hitting, tallying eight kills in 13 attempts with two errors for a .462 hitting percentage. UMass Lowell was led by Madi Bell with 13 kills and Haley Shimon with 12.
UMass Lowell used late runs in the second half of each set to pull away. In the opening set, Quinnipiac was within 18-17 after a kill from sophomore outside hitter Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.), before the River Hawks went on a 5-0 run to build a six-point lead. Coffey had two more kills, and senior middle hitter Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska) and sophomore outside hitter Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.) combined on a block to get to 24-21, but UMass Lowell earned a block on the next point to end the set.
The second set saw the Bobcats surge out to a 14-10 lead on a kill from freshman outside hitter Natalie Alechko (Old Tappan, N.J.), but UMass Lowell responded with a 6-0 run to take a two-point lead. The lead was still within 21-19, but the River Hawks tallied three straight to get to set point at 24-19, and closed out the set on their second try for a 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Bobcats again forged an early lead in the third set, as an Alechko kill made the score 12-9. The River Hawks, though, answered with a pair of 4-0 runs, the first making the score 13-12, and the second stretching out the advantage to 19-14. Quinnipiac responded back with a 3-0 run to close to within 19-17 on a block from Leigh and Miller, but UMass Lowell scored the next five points to take control at 24-17, capping off the match on a kill from Elima Ahzi for a 25-19 win in the third.
Quinnipiac will be back in action when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. contest.
