PHILADELPHIA - The Quinnipiac women's volleyball team bounced back after dropping the opening set to dominate the rest of the match and earn a 3-1 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) in its first match of the 2016 season at the La Salle Invitational on Friday.
The Bobcats battled the host Explorers closely in their second match of the day, but ended up falling 25-20, 25-23, 25-18 for an opening day split. Set scores against Saint Francis were 16-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-20 as Quinnipiac earned at least one win in its opening tournament for the third year in a row. Quinnipiac also won its opening match against Lafayette in 2014 at the Hofstra Invitational, and defeated Holy Cross last season in its third match at the Hampton Invitational.
Sophomore outside hitter Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H. - pictured) had a big day against the Red Flash, tallying a team-high 19 kills for the Bobcats, while committing only two errors for a .415 hitting percentage. The 19 kills were a career high, eclipsing the 18 that she had against UMass-Lowell last year.
The Quinnipiac freshman class was also a big story in the opening day win. Freshman Natalie Alechko (Old Tappan, N.J.) was second on the Bobcats with 15 kills, while also adding 14 digs for a double-double in her collegiate debut. Freshman setter Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) had a big impact in her debut as well, tallying 48 assists in four sets, while freshman defensive specialist Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, P.R.) added a team-high 23 digs defensively. Senior middle hitter Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska), who missed last year with an injury, showed her value in her return, contributing nine kills in only 16 attempts while adding four blocks (two solo).
Alechko led the Bobcats with seven kills in the second match, while Leigh and Coffey each had six. Leigh had her six kills in only 13 attempts, giving her 15 kills in 29 attempts over the two matches. Sophomore outside hitter Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.) led the Bobcats with 12 digs defensively.
After dropping the first set against Saint Francis, the Bobcats opened up the second set with the first four points, as Coffey and junior middle hitter Elzabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) had kills to get Quinnipiac out to an early lead. With the score still tight at 12-10, Coffey had a kill and Alechko followed with back-to-back kills to stretch the lead up to 15-10. With the score 18-13, Alechko (four) and Coffey (three) had kills to account for each of the final seven Bobcat points as they leveled the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 win.
The third set was tight midway through with the Bobcats holding an 11-9 lead, but Quinnipiac took control with a pivotal 6-0 run that stretched the lead up to 17-9. Leigh had two of the final three kills for Quinnipiac as they wrapped up a 25-14 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Bobcats appeared to be on their way to another lopsided win in the fourth set, taking a 16-9 lead on a Coffey kill. The Red Flash regrouped, though, and got back to within 22-20 before a Coffey kill helped stem the tide. After an exchange of points, Miller came through with a kill to get the Bobcats to a 24-21 lead, and after the Red Flash fought off one match point, a service error wrapped up the win.
Against La Salle, the second set proved to the turning point, after the Bobcats came back from a 16-9 deficit to close within a single point at 24-23 on a Miller kill. Catherine Edgington, though, got the set-winning kill for the Explorers for a 25-23 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. Quinnipiac held a 16-14 lead in the third set looking to extend the match, but La Salle went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 20-16 and the Bobcats were unable to claw their way back in as the Explorers closed out the 3-0 win.
Quinnipiac will be back in action tomorrow on the second day of the La Salle Invitational, taking on NJIT at 5 p.m. and Morgan State at 5 p.m.
