PHILADELPHIA – The Quinnipiac volleyball team continued its strong start to the 2016 season on Saturday, picking up two wins on the second day of the La Salle Invitational by identical 3-1 scores over NJIT and Morgan State.
Set scores against NJIT were 26-24, 21-25, 25-13, 25-18, and the Morgan State scores were 25-11, 25-14, 22-25, 25-12, as the Bobcats held their opponents under 20 points in five of their six set wins in improving to 3-1 on the season. Quinnipiac split on opening day Friday afternoon, defeating Saint Francis (Pa.) 3-1 and falling to host La Salle 3-0, and have already matched their win total from all of last year (3-28) in a span of just over 24 hours.
Senior middile hitter Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska - pictured) and freshman libero Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, P.R.) were chosen to the La Salle Invitational All-Tournament team for the Bobcats.
Junior middle hitter Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) had a strong effort in the win over NJIT, tallying nine kills in only 16 attempts, while adding three blocks (two solo) and a pair of aces. Freshman setter Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) had 40 assists in the win, as well as three service aces, while three players had double figures in kills, sophomore outside hitter Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) with 12, freshman outside hitter Natalie Alechko (Old Tappan, N.J.) with 11 and sophomore outside hitter Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.) with 10.
The nightcap saw the Bobcats dominate the first two sets (25-11, 25-14) before Morgan State bounced back to force a fourth before Quinnipiac regrouped to dominate once again (25-12) to close it out. Leigh had 10 kills in 14 attempts, while Coffey had a team-high 13 kills and Pansari (41) reached the 40-assist mark for the third time in four matches.
Against NJIT, the first set proved to be vital for Quinnipiac as it rallied back from a 17-11 deficit and scored the final four points of the set to win 26-24. Kloos started the comeback with a kill to make it 17-12 and added an ace two points later. After NJIT went back ahead 20-15, Miller had three kills in a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 22-21. NJIT earned two set points at 24-22, but Kloos took the first one away with a kill and an error made it 24-24. Coffey then broke the tie with a kill, and another attack error gave the Bobcats the comeback win.
NJIT held off a Quinnipiac comeback to win the second set 25-21 and level the match 1-1, but the Bobcats then found their groove and rolled to comfortable wins in the third and fourth. After falling behind 9-6 in the third, the Bobcats went on a dominant 11-1 run to forge ahead 17-10, using a 6-0 run to make it 12-9 and then a 5-0 run to take a 17-10 lead. Alechko had three kills and an ace in the run, while Kloos had a stretch where she contributed a solo block, a kill and an ace in a span of six Bobcat points. After a brief exchange of points made the score 20-13, the Bobcats closed out with another 5-0 run, keyed by two blocks and a kill from Leigh to take the set 25-13 and earn a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set was back and forth in the early going, before Quinnipiac exploded on a 7-0 run to turn a 10-9 lead into a commanding 17-9 advantage. Miller and Leigh each had two kills during the run, while Pansari chipped in with her third service ace of the match. NJIT had a late run to get within 23-18, but Leigh and Alechko had consecutive kills on the 39th and 40th assists of the day from Pansari to close out the 25-18 win and the 3-1 victory in the match.
The Bobcats were sharp on defense, holding NJIT to only an .078 team hitting percentage. Rodriguez had 13 digs, while Alechko added 10 to give her the second double-double of her young career. Quinnipiac's offense was balanced with five players between 7-12 kills, while the Bobcats added 10 aces.
In the second match of the day, the Bobcats wasted little time in taking control in the first set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead. After the momentum leveled off and the score stretched out to 15-9, Quinnipiac ran off nine points in a row to take a commanding 24-9 lead. Morgan State bounced back with the next two points, but freshman outside hitter Kaleigh Oates (Downington, Pa.) finished off the set with a kill.
The second set was tight for a while, with the Bobcats holding a 16-14 lead, but once against Quinnipiac came through with a huge scoring run, taking the last nine points for a 25-14 win. Senior defensive specialist Cody Michaels (Versailles, Ky.) had four aces during the run, including three in a row to take the score from 21-14 to 24-14, before the set ended on a Morgan State error.
The script was flipped in the third set as the Bobcats seemed to be continuing on cruise control up 12-7, before Morgan State responded with a 10-1 run to take a 17-13 lead. After Quinnipiac battled back, the Bears used a 3-0 run to push their lead to 24-19. The Bobcats did fight off three set points, before Morgan State was able to take the 25-22 win with a kill to stay in the match.
Quinnipiac refocused for the fourth, though, and roared out to an 11-1 lead, as Alechko got things started with two aces in a 4-0 run. Morgan State called timeout trailing 8-1, but it didn't stop the momentum as kills from Coffey and Leigh pushed the lead up to double figures at 11-1. Morgan State got back to within five points at 17-12, but Quinnipiac closed out the match with an 8-0 run, ending it on two straight Kloos aces.
The Bobcats again had strong balance with five players between 7-13 kills, while hitting .296 as a team (including a whopping .538 in the first set). Morgan State, meanwhile, was held to just .068 hitting, while being victimized by 15 service aces (including four apiece from Pansari, Alechko and Michaels).
Quinnipiac is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts its home opener against Bryant at 7 p.m. at Burt Kahn Gymnasium.
