NEW BRITAIN, Connecticut – Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) was the star performer for the Quinnipiac baseball team on Wednesday as he exploded for a double, home run and five RBIs as the Bobcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead through 4 and a half innings and defeated the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils, 9-5, Wednesday afternoon at the CCSU Baseball Field.
Moskey was 2 for 4 on the afternoon with his prolific day from the plate as his home run also goes down as the first of his career.
Rob Pescitelli (West Islip, New York) was one of six Bobcats to record two or more hits in the game as he went 3 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Quinnipiac's win snaps a three-game losing streak as the Bobcats improve to 8-17 on the season while Central Connecticut falls to 10-15 on the season.
Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) went 2 for 4 with two stolen bases, one RBI and one run scored while Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) went 3 for 5 with his fifth three-hit game of the season, chipping in a run and scoring a double.
Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) and Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) each recorded two hits for the Bobcats while Oestreicher tripled and scored a run.
Starting pitcher Brandon Shileikis (North Dighton, Massachusetts) picked up his first win of the season as he pitched five scoreless innings with just four hits allowed and two strikeouts to dominate the Blue Devils. Robert Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) was just as effective in relief as he picked up his second save of the season in 1 1/3 innings of work with two strikeouts and just one hit allowed.
The Bobcats scored single runs over the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. Pescitelli launched a solo home run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Oestreicher tripled to centerfield with no outs in the inning and came home to score on a wild pitch. Batten singled to lead off the third inning before going to third on Saporito's single to right field. With runners on the corners, Pescitelli reached on an infield single that scored Batten.
Quinnipiac got three key runs in the top of the sixth inning as they extended their lead to 6-0. Ben Gibson (Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts) walked on a full count then advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Burns walk to put two runners, the Bobcats pulled off the double steal as Gibson was safe at third after an error by the third baseman. Moskey followed up the play with a three-run home run over the right field fence for his first career home run.
Central Connecticut got four runs back in the bottom of the sixth after Shileikis left the game. Ryan Costello came home to score the first run of the game for the Blue Devils on a Nick Garland fielder's choice. Two batters later, Chandler Debrosse singled home two runs with a bases loaded single to right field. A walk to John Lippincott loaded up the bases again followed by a Dean Lockery walk scored Matt Martinez to make it 6-4.
Burns got things started once again in the top of the seventh inning. After back-to-back singles by Pescitelli and Iannotti, Oestreicher laid down a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position. Gibson walked followed by Burns' RBI single through the left side of the infield to make it 7-4. Moskey reached on a fielder's choice that scored Iannotti and Gibson was thrown out at home trying to put another run on the board.
The Blue Devils managed just one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Debrosse ripped a full count double down the right field line before scoring on Lippincott's single in the next at bat.
John Bodenhamer (Maple Valley, Washington) came on as a pinch runner for Oestreicher after a lead-off single in the top of the ninth inning before scoring all the way from first base on Moskey's double to centerfield before Hitt's 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning sealed the win.
The Quinnipiac baseball team returns to the diamond on Saturday, Apr. 9 with a doubleheader at the Siena Baseball Field slated for 12 PM followed by a single game on Sunday, Apr. 10 at 12 PM.
