A Dozen Home Games, Please
After spending 31 of the first 35 games on the road, the Quinnipiac baseball team will finally enjoy a stretch of 12 of the next 13 games at the QU Baseball Field. The Bobcats will open up the stretch with a three game series against the Manhattan Jaspers beginning on Saturday, April 23 at 12 PM with a doubleheader followed by the final game of the series on Sunday, April 24 at 12 PM.
All-Time Against Manhattan
The Bobcats own a 5-2 record all-time against the Jaspers, with six of the seven matchups between the two teams taking place since the Bobcats joined the MAAC for the 2014 season. Last season, the Bobcats took two of three on the road, sweeping the doubleheader with 11-9 and 6-0 wins before falling in the series finale, 6-5.
Scouting the Jaspers
Manhattan comes in with an overall record of 11-22 (3-6 MAAC), having won their last two games after dropping three straight dating back to last Wednesday at Hofstra. The Jaspers are coming off a 7-6, extra inning victory over the New York Institute of Technology. Christian Santisteban leads the Jaspers with an impressive .361 batting average through all 32 games this season. He leads the team with 23 runs scored, 44 hits, 12 doubles, 17 walks, and a .448 on base percentage. Pena has raked at the plate to the tune of a .339 batting average with five home runs and 30 RBIs, leading the team in both categories. Joey Rocchietti has been the most successful weekend starter, going 4-3 with a 3.76 ERA and is coming off back-to-back complete games. He leads the team with 52 2/3 innings pitched while Tom Cosgrove leads all pitchers with 45 strikeouts.
Last Time Out
It was a tale of two different games for the Bobcats in their mid-week slate as they lost on Tuesday at Albany, 24-14, in a high-scoring affair before recovering to defeat Rhode Island on Thursday, 2-1. Matthew Batten and Rob Pescitelli each had an impressive week for the Bobcats. Batten led the team with five hits, three runs, two triples, five RBIs and two stolen bases while Pescitelli had a triple, two home runs, three runs, four RBIs and three walks.
In the MAAC
Quinnipiac climbed for 10th to seventh in regular season league standings with the sweep of Iona. Quinnipiac sits 1.5 games behind Niagara for the final playoff spot, but there are still 15 regular season MAAC games remaining on the schedule. As of Thursday, Apr. 21, the Bobcats' offense was fifth in batting average (.252), fourth in slugging percentage (.337), fourth in hits (287), fifth in doubles (51), second in home runs (18), fourth in total bases (400), fifth in walks (134), second in sac bunts (26), first in sac flies (16), and tied second in stolen bases (47). Pitching-wise, the Bobcats ranked fifth in opponent batting average (.291), second in batters struck out looking (73), tied second in runners picked off (7), fifth in hits allowed (333) and runs allowed (216), second in fielding percentage (.972) and tied second in double plays turned (27).
Lots of Runs
Despite falling 24-14 at Albany, Quinnipiac's 14 runs scored was the most they had scored in a single game since April 13, 2012 when they defeated the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 17-3, as a member of the Northeast Conference. It was just Quinnipiac's second time this season scoring 10 or more runs in a game.
En Fuego
Batten had an incredible two games during the mid-week as he led the team with five hits, three runs, two triples, five RBIs and two stolen bases. Batten's five RBIs at Albany were a new single-game career-high while his three-hit game was his seventh such game of the season. With two hits at Rhode Island, Batten now has 14 multi-hit games this season. Batten is now fourth in the MAAC in runs (29), third in hits (50), tied for fourth in total bases (68), and first in assists (119).
Power Surge
Rob Pescitelli absolutely mashed in the first two games of this week as he hit two home runs and a triple among his four hits with four RBIs, three runs scored and three walks. Pescitelli recorded his first career two home run game and four RBI game at Albany on Tuesday. Pescitelli now has 30 walks this season. He is tied for third in the league in on base percentage (.457), third in runs scored (30), first in walks (30) and tied for second in stolen bases (16).
Ayyy Burnsayy
Joseph Burns has started to right the ship for the Bobcats as he posted three hits in two games with both of his doubles coming at Rhode Island on Thursday. Burns also came around to score one run and drive in one RBI. Burns now has six doubles this season, good for fifth on the team. With two doubles, he recorded his seventh multi-hit game of the season, tied for fourth on the team.
Consistency Kills
Lou Iannotti tallied a pair of doubles in the two road contests for the Bobcats for his only two hits of the week so far. Iannotti scored once and drove in on RBI while walking twice. Iannotti has been a mainstay at the top of the stat sheet for the Bobcats as he extended his on base streak to 13 games, his second longest such streak of the season. Iannotti leads the team with 25 RBIs, is tied for first on the team with nine doubles while his 41 hits are second on the roster.
Settling In
Brian Moskey extended his season-long hitting streak to six games with a hit in each game of the week. Moskey also drew a single-game high four walks against at Albany on Tuesday to give him 20 on the season, second on the team. Moskey scored three runs for the Bobcats as well in the 16-run output.
Another Great Start
Brandon Shileikis picked up his second win of the season with a pretty solid start. After giving up a leadoff home run at Rhode Island, Shileikis settled in to limit damage and did not allow a single run despite seven more hits allowed. Shileikis lowered his season ERA to 2.75 after making his third start of the season.
In a Groove
Robert Hitt recorded his fifth save of the season as he has really settled into the closer's role. Hitt's save was also the sixth of his career, as the sophomore is just two saves shy of tying the single-season program record set by Gary Binkiewicz during the 2013-14 season. Hitt has lowered his ERA from a season-high 12.67 on March 19 to 7.08 as he has allowed just four earned runs in his last 10 appearances since entering the bullpen.
Get me Some of That
Jankins' eight shutout innings were his second such performance of the season. He has had particularly good success against Iona, as he recorded a three-hit shutout against the Gaels with nine strikeouts in the 2014 season as a freshman. Jankins has pitching at least six innings in seven of his eight starts this season and recorded six or more strikeouts in six of the eight. He is two strikeouts shy of tying his career-high 53 strikeouts. His 51 strikeouts are the most in the league
Shake it Off
Taylor Luciani has proven to be a solid No. 2 starter for the Bobcats as pitched six innings for the eighth consecutive start this season, good for 52 innings pitched in his sophomore season. Luciani allowed just one unearned run for the Bobcats with two walks and four strikeouts as he lowered his team-leading ERA to 2.94. Luciani has been among the MAAC leader this season as he his second with a 2.94 ERA, .228 opponent batting average, 52 innings pitched, third fewest runs allowed and fourth fewest earned runs allowed.
