KINGSTON, Rhode Island – Three different Quinnipiac baseball players recorded multiple hits and the Quinnipiac bullpen pitched four scoreless innings in relief on Thursday afternoon as the Bobcats picked up a big non-conference victory over the Rhode Island Rams, 2-1, at Bill Beck Field.
With the win, Quinnipiac has now won five of its last six games as the Bobcats improve to 14-21 (4-5 MAAC) on the season. Rhode Island dropped its four straight game of the season to fall to 13-19 (5-4 A-10).
Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, New York) went 2 for 4 with a triple, walk and a run scored while Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) went 2 for 4 with two doubles and a RBI in the win. Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) picked up two hits and a stolen base in the victory.
Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) also picked up a double, walked and scored a run for the Bobcats.
Brandon Shileikis (North Dighton, Massachusetts) picked up his second win of the season after pitching the first five innings of the contest, limiting the Rams to one run on eight hits and three strikeouts. Robert Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) recorded his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning and one strikeout while Joseph Scaglione (Wyckoff, New Jersey) and Matthew Osieja (Wyckoff, New Jersey) each recorded two strikeouts in one inning of relief.
After the Bobcats stranded runners on first and third in the top of the first inning on a two-out Pescitelli triple and Iannotti walk, Chris Hess hit a lead-off home run in the bottom half of the inning to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. That home run was all the offense Rhode Island could muster as the Bobcats did not allow another run in the game.
Quinnipiac took the lead in the top of the sixth inning and didn't look back. Pescitelli reached on an infield single to the shortstop and Iannotti doubled to put both runners in scoring position. Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) grounded out to second base to score Pescitelli to tie the game, 1-1. Burns brought home Iannotti in the next at bat as he doubled to centerfield, scoring Iannotti easily and giving Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead. The Bobcats ultimately stranded the bases loaded to end the inning but managed to hang on.
The Quinnipiac baseball team returns to action on Saturday, April 23 when they host the Manhattan Jaspers in a three-game series with the doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 PM followed by Sunday's single game at 12 PM.
