Devon Toews Signs With NHL's New York Islanders

Quinnipiac men's ice hockey junior Devon Toews (Abbotsford, British Columbia) has signed a three-year, entry level contract with the National Hockey League's (NHL) New York Islanders, as announced by the organization on Friday, April 15, 2016.
"I'm excited to announce that I have signed my first professional contract with the New York Islanders," Toews said. "Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my hockey development, from past players and coaches to family and friends. Thank you to my teammates, coaches, support staff and, of course, the fans of Quinnipiac University for allowing me to be a part of your community for the past three years."
Toews is coming off his most successful season as a member of Quinnipiac's men's ice hockey team as he career highs in goals (7), assists (23) and points (30) while earning All-ECAC Hockey Second Team and New England Second Team All-Star recognition. In addition, he was a finalist for ECAC Hockey Best Defensive Defenseman Award and was tied for the team lead with a +27.
"We want to thank Devon for his contribution to Quinnipiac hockey - both on-and-off the ice," Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold said. "He is a phenomenal player and an even-better person. We wish him all the best as he pursues his career with the New York Islanders."
Toews' offensive numbers not only stood up as the best of his career, but they also led all Quinnipiac defensemen, while his +27, 23 assists and 30 points led all ECAC Hockey blue-liners, with his point total also ranking fifth nationally.
"Devon Toews has developed into a solid two-way defenseman with an offensive upside," Islanders Director of Player Development Eric Cairns said. "His skating and mobility, hockey sense and poise are great assets in his game that make him ready for the professional game. He sees the ice well from the offensive blue line which is key, because he possesses a hard shot that he's able to find ways of putting on net."
Following the conclusion of the 2013-14 season, Toews was chosen by the Islanders in the fourth round of that year's NHL Draft. Toews was taken with the 108th overall pick of the draft and was the second-highest drafted player in Quinnipiac history.
