HAMDEN, Connecticut - Quinnipiac women's ice hockey senior Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ontario) scored the game's only goal as the top-seeded Bobcats defeated Clarkson, 1-0, to capture the 2016 ECAC Hockey Championship. The title is the first in the program's history and comes after the Bobcats won the first regular-season championship. The Bobcats improve to 30-2-5 on the year.
Brown's second goal of the playoffs was a team-high and earned her ECAC Hockey All-Tournament Team honors. The game proved to be a landmark accomplishment for Brown who, along with senior Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) suited up for their program record 148th career game.
In addition to Brown, Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) had a team-best four points for the tournament, scoring once and assisting on three more goals to earn all-tournament accolades. Emma Greco (Burlington, Ontario) was named to the All-Tournament Defense after scoring her second career goal in the Bobcats' win against St. Lawrence in the ECAC Hockey Semifinals on Saturday, March 5. Bobcats' goalie Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Rossman, who was honored as the 2016 ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Year earlier in the week, blanked Clarkson to the tune of 16 saves for the fifth shutout in ECAC Hockey Championship Game history. Her 16th shutout of the season tied former Bobcat netminder Chelsea Laden's single-season record, set last season.
Brown's goal was her eighth of the year and came with less than two minutes to play in the first period. Bobcats' captain Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) handled the puck along the boards after the Bobcats won the faceoff and shipping it to Connery at the point. Connery fired a shot on goal that sailed wide and bounced off the boards behind Clarkson's goal. Brown was waiting to clean up the carom off the boards just above the crease where she tucked it inside the near post to give Quinnipiac the lead.
With the win, Quinnipiac will now make its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Bobcats will learn of their seeding and site location for next week's regional on Sunday, March 6 at 9 PM. Fans interested in watching the NCAA Tournament Selection Show can tune into NCAA.com.
