The Quinnipiac baseball team returns to the diamond after a day off on Thursday when they travel to South Orange, New Jersey to take on the Seton Hall Pirates in a three-game series beginning on Friday, Apr. 1 at 6 PM before hitting the diamond on Saturday, Apr. 2 and 1 PM and wrapping up the series on Sunday, Apr. 3 at 12 PM.
All-Time Against Seton Hall
Quinnipiac and Seton Hall have faced off just one other time in the past, back on March 13, 2002 with the Pirates winning the game, 6-4.
Scouting the Pirates
Seton Hall comes into the weekend series with an impressive record of 17-8, including an 8-1 record at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange. The Pirates recorded two wins against Missouri, one win at Florida International, two wins vs. Indiana. Seton Hall had a 12-game winning streak for March 5 to March 26. The Pirates are also 7-0 against MAAC opponents. Mikael-Ali Moques leads the Pirates with a .317 batting average with a team-high six doubles, one triple and one home run with 13 RBIs and 14 runs scored. He also has a .462 on base percentage and .451 slugging percentage. Derek Jankins has been on fire this season as well, batting .316 with a team-high 30 hits, 17 RBIs and second most 15 runs scored. All three of Seton Hall's starting pitcher have ERA's below 4.00, led by Dana Cullen's 4-0 record and 1.20 ERA. He has struck out 28 batters in 30 innings with just four runs and 13 hits allowed, and opponents are batting just .134 against the lefty.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over Dartmouth on Wednesday, March 30. Matthew Batten went 3 for 4 in the game with a double, run scored and a stolen bases. Brian Moskey has turned up the heat lately has he went 2 for 4 with a double, run, RBI and stolen base as well. The Bobcats bullpen was dominant on Wednesday, tossing six innings with one run and five hits allowed. Robert Hitt picked up his first save of the season with two hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Bowling for Bats
Batten picked up his third three-hit game of the season and fifth multiple hit game with his 3 for 4 performance at Dartmouth. Batten also came around to score his team-high 16th run of the season and stole his sixth base of the season, good for second on the team. Batten's five doubles are also good for second on the team.
Big Game Jankins
Despite taking his third loss of the season, Thomas Jankins had another impressive start for the Bobcats as he struck out a season-high nine batters in eight innings. Jankins has now struck out solid all season long despite his 2-3 record. In 34 2/3 innings, Jankins has a 3.37 ERA and struck out 37 batters with opponents hitting just .244 against the Bobcats righty.
Full Nelson
Ryan Nelson led the Bobcats in three games with four hits, going 4 for 11 with a run and a RBI. Nelson also had an impressive feat as he stole home in game one in the Saturday doubleheader. This season, Nelson is second on the team with a .308 batting average, 24 hits and four doubles. Nelson is riding a four-game hitting streak for the Bobcats. He also has seven multi-hit games this season.
Brian's Song
Brian Moskey had one of his best weekends of the season, batting .333 as he went 3 for 9 with a double and a run scored. Moskey has three doubles this season for the Bobcats and eight runs scored while his nine walks are third on the team. Moskey continued his strong stretch with a hit in his fourth straight game as he went 2 for 4 against the Dartmouth Big Green with his fourth double of the season.
Saving the Day
Picking up his first save of the season, Hitt lowered his ERA by a couple of runs against the Big Green and picked up his 20th strikeout of the season, good for second on the team behind Jankins' 37 this season. Hitt now has two saves in his career after picking up one last season
Racking up the Wins
Gregory Egan (Seldon, New York) picked up his second win of the season and of his career with an inning of relief where he allowed just on walk to improve his record to 2-1.
Orange Julius
Julius Saporito had a great weekend for the Bobcats as he went 2 for 5 in two games with a walk and a run scored, one of his best weekends of the season. Overall, Saporito has six hits this season with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Goodfella
Robert Hitt had his best weekend of the season after coming out of the bullpen against the Marist Red Foxes. The sophomore pitcher 4 2/3 innings for his longest outing of the season, scattering seven hits with one run and a season-high five strikeouts.
Luciani's Solid
Taylor Luciani continued his impressive season for the Bobcats despite a loss on Saturday, as he tossed seven innings for the second time this season. The righty allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Luciani has be reliable all season, allowing two earned runs in four of his five starts for the Bobcats. He is 2-2 this season with a 3.66 ERA in five starts, while his 32 innings is second on the team and his 17 strikeouts are fourth on the team.
On Deck
After facing Seton Hall this weekend, the Bobcats will take travel to Kingston, R.I. on Tuesday, Apr. 5 at 3 PM to take on the Rhode Island Rams at Bill Beck Field.
