Home Sweet Home
The Quinnipiac baseball team returns to the QU Baseball Field this weekend where they went 15-7 during the 2015 season as the Bobcats host the Yale Bulldogs in the Battle of Whitney Ave. at 3 PM on Wednesday, March 23.
All-Time Against Yale
The Bobcats are 4-4 against the Bulldogs in eight meetings in the program's Division I history, including winning three of the last four games between the two teams. Last time out, Quinnipiac beat Yale 11-3 at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Massachusetts. Matthew Oestreicher led the way with two home runs, including a first inning grand slam. The top four batters in the line-up combined to go 9 for 17 with six runs scored in the game while the Bobcats pitchers combined for nine strikeouts.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale has struggled this season, posting a 1-11-1 record with their only win coming this past weekend against Holy Cross. The Bulldogs opened up the season with a 10-game winless streak as they went 0-9-1 before the win against Holy Cross in their home opener. Richard Slenker hit two doubles and scored three runs while starting pitcher Scott Politz allowed just one run on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts in eight innings. Nate Adams leads the team with a .407 batting average and has scored four runs. Slenker is batting .295 with a team-high 13 hits, eight runs, three doubles, one home run and two stolen bases. Projected starting pitcher Benny Wagner will make his first career start. He has made three appearances this season, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in five innings. Wagner is 0-0 with a 6.84 ERA.
Heating Up
Joseph Burns is starting to tear the cover off the ball as he has hit three home runs in his past four games, and two in the last two games. Burns hit his first career home run against Bethune-Cookman before launching two against North Florida. He currently leads the team in home runs and is second in runs scored with 10.
A New Streak
Matthew Batten is riding a 10-game hitting streak, batting .326 over the span with 14 hits. Batten's best game of the season came against Bethune-Cookman where he went 3 for 5 with his first career home run, a double and three stolen bases. Batten's hitting streak is the second longest of the season behind Lou Iannotti's 15-game hitting streak. Last season, Batten set the Division I program record with a 25-game hitting streak.
Nelly's World
Ryan Nelson was one of the top Bobcats this past week as he batted .375 over four games against Bethune-Cookman and North Florida, including his first home run of the season. Nelson recorded multiple-hit games in three straight games, going 2 for 4 in each one with an extra base hit.
Top Gun
Thomas Jankins has been electric for the Bobcats this season, striking out 28 batters in four outings of work. The Bobcats' righthander has tossed a team-high 26 2/3 innings, including his last start where he pitched eight scoreless innings.
Save Machine
Alex Vargas has transitioned into his new closer role with the Bobcats fairly effectively, already recording four saves this season, just three away from tying the single-season program record. Vargas has yet to allow a run of his own this season with 7 2/3 innings in eight appearances.
Big Ben
Ben Gibson launched his second home run of the season this past weekend against the North Florida Ospreys to continue his impressive power-hitting this season. Gibson has also record back-to-back multiple hit games, going 4 for 8 in the final two games of the series with three runs scored. Gibson is batting .298 on the season with seven doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs, seven runs scored, along with a .526 slugging percentage.
Up the Ranks
Lou Iannotti had his 15-game hitting streak come to an end in the final game of the weekend series with North Florida, ending his longest career hitting streak. The streak also is up there in Division I program history as it ranks tied for the eighth longest.
On Deck
The Quinnipiac baseball team will travel to Marist to open up a three-game series on Thursday, March 24 with a single game beginning at 3 PM followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, March 26 beginning at 12 PM.
