Wrapping Up the Week
The Quinnipiac baseball team traveled across the state of Florida for the final half of their spring break trip where they will face the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in a mid-week game on Wednesday in Daytona Beach before moving North to Jacksonville to take on the North Florida Ospreys over the weekend in a three-game series.
All-Time Against Bethune-Cookman
Quinnipiac and Bethune-Cookman have faced off just one other time prior to Wednesday when they met on March 14, 2007 in a mid-week match with the Wildcats coming away with the 4-2 win. Head coach John Delaney and pitching coach Pat Egan both played in the game for the Bobcats, with Delaney picking up a hit as the lead-off hitter.
Scouting the Wildcats
Bethune-Cookman is 5-10 this season with an 0-3 mark in MEAC play. The Wildcats are coming off three straight losses against conference foe Florida A&M and have lost five of their last six games. They will face North Florida on Tuesday before facing the Bobcats on Wednesday. Michael Cruz leads the Wildcats with a .352 batting average, starting all 15 games, going 19 for 54 with seven RBIs and eight runs scored. Jameel Edney is just behind Cruz for second on the team with a .321 batting average with two home runs , five doules, 11 RBIs eight runs scored seven walks and a .518 slugging percentage. Projected starting pitching Donte Lindsay is 1-1 this season with a 6.97 ERA in five appearances and two starts. Lindsay has pitched 10 1/3 innings allowing 12 runs on 13 hits with nine walks and 10 strikeouts while opponents are batting .295 against the lefthander.

Scouting the Ospreys
North Florida is 9-8 this season heading into their mid-week games, riding a three-game winning streak that snapped a three-game losing streak. North Florida is coming off a three-game sweep of UNC Wilmington where they scored 28 runs in three games. Prior to that, the Ospreys were narrowly defeated by the nationally-ranked No. 1 Florida Gators in a two-game mid-week series. North Florida is led by Keith Skinner's .441 batting average through 17 games with 26 hits, five doubles, one home run, 12 RBIs, 16 runs scored and 13 walks. Seven players are batting above .300 this season and the team is batting .307 as a unit. Despite playing in just nine games, Christian Diaz has belted four home runs with 13 RBIs. Corbin Olmstead, Chris Thibideau, Alex Merritt and Nick Karmeris each have two home runs this season while Olmstead leads the team with 20 RBIs. In four starts this season, Bryan Baker has been magnificent for the Ospreys, going 1-1 with a 1.14 ERA in 23 2/3 innings pitched. He has allowed three earned runs on 17 hits with 28 strikeouts and opponents are batting .198. In addition to his power, Olmstead has been an effective closer with three saves, going 1-0 with a .164 ERA while opponents are batting .135 against him.
Weekend Recap
Last weekend, Quinnipiac went 1-3 against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles but were competitive in all four games of the series. The Bobcats came from behind to win the third game of the series on March 12, 10-9, for their fifth win of the season. Lou Iannotti led the Bobcats with a .647 batting average, recording 11 hits in 17 at bats. Iannotti recorded multiple hits in all four games. Ryan Nelson went 6 for 15 in the series with a double while Ben Gibson and John Bodenhamer each hit their first home runs of the season. Gibson added four doubles and six RBIs over the weekend as well.
Offensive Explosion
The Bobcats recorded a season-high 10 runs and 18 hits in their victory against the Eagles as the bats came alive all weekend. They also tied their season-high with 21 runs in the series while their 48 hits over four games was the most they have recorded this season. Quinnipiac's 13 doubles were five more than they had in their first eight games of the season combined.
Lucky Lou
Lou Iannotti has been on an absolute tear for the Bobcats to open up the season, currently riding a 12-game hitting streak with five straight multiple-hit games. Iannotti batted .647 against Florida Gulf Coast, recording 11 hits in 17 at bats with two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. The Bobcats backstop also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch for a .684 on-base percentage. Overall this season, Iannotti leads the team with a .468 batting average, .528 on base percentage, 22 hits, 10 RBIs and 25 total bases.
Nelly
Ryan Nelson had a great weekend for the Bobcats as he was second on the team with a .400 batting average and recorded six hits. Nelson hit a double and scored two runs as rose to .277 on the season with 13 hits, tied for third on the team.
Grip It and Rip It
The power surge continued for Ben Gibson has he was on fire in Saturday's doubleheader at Florida Gulf Coast to boost his power numbers for the season. In the series, Gibson batted .375 (6 for 16) with four doubles and his first home run of the season. Gibson also drove in six RBIs to lead the box and came around to score two runs. This season, Gibson already has seven doubles and is batting .317 with a team-best .561 slugging percentage. Last season as a freshman, Gibson hit eight doubles for the entire season.
But Can He Get On Base?
Rob Pescitelli extended his on base streak to 12 games to open up the season and 19 games dating back to last season. Pescitelli recorded five hits and four walks over the weekend for a .429 on base percentage, tied for the third best on the weekend. Pescitelli also came around to score a team-high four runs. This season, Pescitelli is batting .289 with a .429 on base percentage, leading the team with 10 walks while his 10 runs scored are second on the team.
Mr. Consistent
Matthew Batten batted .333 against the Eagles with six hits for the Bobcats, including a double for his third double of the season. Batten came around to score three runs while his .429 on base percentage was tied with Pescitelli for third over the weekend. Batten is batting .292 for the season with 14 hits, six RBIs, 11 runs scored and two stolen bases.
Flex That Muscle
John Bodenhamer flexed his muscle for the Bobcats at the plate last weekend with his first career home run in a Quinnipiac uniform as he went 2 for 4 in the Bobcats final game against the Eagles. Bodenhamer also hit a double in the game for his first double of the season.
First Win
Reliever Gregory Egan picked up the first win of his career in the Bobcats 10-9 win against the Eagles, his only appearance of the weekend. Egan was nearly perfect in his 1 1/3 inning, walking just one batter as he bridged the gap from the sixth to the eighth inning. Egan's appearance was his third of the season as opponents are batting just .167 against him in three innings.
Saving the Day
Alex Vargas picked up his third save of the season for the Bobcats as he made his fifth appearance. Vargas pitched the final two innings where allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out three batters. This season, Vargas has yet to give up a run of his own, as he has allowed four hits in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts. Opponents are batting .235 against the Bobcats' closer.
Strike Him Out
Despite picking up his second loss of the season, Thomas Jankins had another good start for the Bobcats in which he tied his season-high with eight strikeouts. Jankins tossed a season-high 6 2/3 innings against the Eagles, allowing three earned runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. This season, Jankins leads the Bobcats with 21 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings and has a 4.34 ERA which is second among starting pitchers on the staff.
Home Sweet Home
The Quinnipiac baseball team will return home for their first home game of the season on Wednesday, March 23 at 3 PM when they host the Yale Bulldogs in their annual March meeting.
