HAMDEN, Conn. – No. 1 seed Quinnipiac University men's soccer fell to No. 2 Rider in the MAAC Championship on Sunday, Nov. 13 at the QU Soccer Field. The loss ends the Bobcats' 2016 season, where the team went 13-7-0 (8-2-0 MAAC) and claimed the program's fourth regular season conference title in the last five years.
Rider has now won two consecutive MAAC Championship games, and four in program history.
Freshman Conor McCoy (Newry, Northern Ireland) scored his third goal of the season in the Bobcats' loss. McCoy, sophomore forward Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Connecticut), and sophomore midfielder Matthew Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) were all named to the MAAC All-Tournament team.
The Broncs got on the board first in the 42nd minute, as junior forward Elliot Otmani found the back of the net – with an assist credited to Christian Flath. Flath stole the ball on the offensive side of the field, then dumped it back to Otmani who blasted it home.
McCoy tied the game 1-1 just six minutes into the second half, though, scoring in the 51st minute. Senior captain James Doig (Liverpool, England) played a ball into the box, which McCoy tracked down and deflected into the back of the net.
Rider regained the lead in the 62nd minute, as freshman Clement Bourret blasted a shot from just outside the box that found its way in to make it 2-1. Senior Jose Aguinaga scored the Broncs third and final goal in the 85th minute of play, assisted by Flath.
Bobcats' freshman goalkeeper Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece) made two saves in net. Rider tallied 11 shots in total, while Quinnipiac recorded nine.
Quinnipiac went 9-2 in its last 11 games, including a program record seven straight conference wins in the month of October. The season marks the end of the road for the Bobcats' graduating class: forward Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, New Jersey), goalkeeper Brian Westerman (Rockville Centre, New York) and defender Liam O'Sullivan (Trumball, Connecticut).
Seven members of the team earned conference individual awards from the 2016 campaign. Head coach Eric Da Costa was named BSN Sports MAAC Coach of the Year, Eamon Whelan (New Fairfield, Connecticut) earned MAAC Rookie of the Year honors, Whelan, McCoy and Jeppe Haehre (Baerums Verk, Norway) were selected to the First Team All-MAAC, while Dally (Bloomfield, Connecticut) and Doig (Liverpool, England) grabbed Second Team All-MAAC honors. Whelan, McCoy, Haehre and Iakovidis were all named to the All-Rookie squad.
