QU Men's Soccer Scores Three Times To Top Monmouth, 3-1, on Saturday Afternoon

HAMDEN, Connecticut – James Doig (Liverpool, England), Eamon Whelan (New Fairfield, Connecticut) and Matthew Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) all scored a goal to lead Quinnipiac men's soccer past Monmouth in a conference match on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the QU Soccer Field. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 9-5-0 (5-1-0 MAAC) this season while Monmouth falls to 4-7-2 (3-3-0 MAAC).
Quinnipiac remains in sole possession of first place in the MAAC with the win, as the Bobcats are the only team with five conference victories.
Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece) made six saves in net, earning his ninth win of the season for the Bobcats. Monmouth's Brandon McCarthy had a point-blank opportunity in the 20th minute, but Iakovidis made a diving stop to keep things scoreless. Iakovidis now has a 0.76 goals against average and a .850 save percentage on the season.
Moments later, Whelan netted Quinnipiac's first goal of the afternoon at 20:42. Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, New Jersey) placed a perfect cross to Whelan from the left side of the field, and the freshman scored on a diving header to make it 1-0 Bobcats. The goal is Whelan's eighth of the season – which leads the team and ranks No. 2 in the MAAC.
James Doig scored his third goal of the year at 34:02, converting a penalty kick to increase the Bobcats' lead to two goals. Filosmar Cordeiro was taken down in the box for a penalty, setting up the captain's score.
Monmouth's Dave Nigro cut the Quinnipiac lead in half, belting a penalty kick into the lower-right corner of the net at 76:24 in the second half..
Taylor put the game away, though, lofting a knuckling free kick into the back of the net with just five minutes remaining to make it 3-1. The goal is Taylor's second of the season.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 19, hosting Siena at the QU Soccer Field in Hamden for a 4 p.m. start.
