TROY, New York – The nationally-ranked No. 4/4 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to 14 games as the Bobcats skated to a 0-0 tie with the Rensselaer Engineers on Friday night at Houston Field House.
Despite extending the unbeaten streak, Quinnipiac's program record 10-game winning streak came to an end with the Bobcats second scoreless tie of the season. The Bobcats previously skated to a 0-0 tie with the Colgate Raiders on Nov. 6.
Quinnipiac maintains its handle on first place in ECAC Hockey with the tie as the Bobcats move to 16-1-4 (9-1-3 ECAC Hockey) while Rensselaer picks up its second straight tie to improve to 5-10-4 (3-4-2 ECAC Hockey).
Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) made 15 saves in the tie for the Bobcats to earn her ninth shutout of the season and 11th of her career. She is now one shutout shy of tying Wisconsin's Ann-Renee Desbiens for the most shutouts in the country. Rossman was particularly big in the third period and overtime, picking up seven of her 15 saves including a huge stick save with traffic in front and just 50 seconds left on the clock in overtime. Rossman also extended her career-long unbeaten streak to 14 games with the tie.
Rossman's counterpart from Rensselaer, Lovisa Selander, recorded her third most saves in a game this season with 40 in the scoreless tie.
Quinnipiac held a steady shot advantage throughout the game, outshooting Rensselaer 40-15. In every period of regulation, the Bobcats tallied at least 12 shots with a game-high 13 in the first period.
The Bobcats penalty kill continued to shine on Friday as they were a perfect 2 for 2 to improve to 93.2 percent on the season. The power play was 0 for 1, but the Bobcats recorded three quality chances with the man advantage.
In the first two periods, the Bobcats hit a pair of posts that made it past Selander. Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) rung one off the cross-bar in the first period before Lindsey West (Ajax, Ontario) drilled the right post with a blast from the point with 2:50 to play in the second period.
Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) had two prime scoring chances a minute a part from each other in the third period that nearly gave the Bobcats the lead. With 12:20 to play in the third period, Kosta had a shot denied by Selander with a huge glove save followed by another big pad save by Selander with just under 11 minutes to play. Randi Marcon (Winnipeg, Manitoba) had one of the best opportunities of the game with 2:50 to play in the third period as she was all alone in the slot after a pass from Meghan Turner (Bedford, New Hampshire) but Selander made another key glove save.
The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team returns to action Saturday afternoon when it takes on the Union Dutchwomen at Messa Rink in Schenectady, New York with puck drop scheduled for 4 P.M.
