NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's basketball team continue to make waves in the surrounding community as student-athletes and staff members made the trip to St. Martin De Porres Academy on Columbus Avenue in New Haven on Thursday, Jan. 21. The trip to New Haven continues the Bobcats' long run of community service events organized as part of the Quinnipiac Athletes' commitment to the Positive Play initiative.
Nearly the entire Bobcat roster took time out busy in-season schedule and made the trek down to New Haven as 14 of the 15 student-athletes played a key role in the early morning math lessons at the middle school. Each Bobcat was paired off with one or two fifth grade students and then aided the children in the metric system as well as some group learning activities. In their down time, the Bobcats all swapped stories with the children and enjoyed their three-hour block of time where many laughs were shared. In the final 10 minutes, the class broke out for recess where the Bobcats were more than happy to oblige with a game of pick-up hoops.
The afternoon spent at the St. Martin De Porres Academy was a perfect opportunity for Quinnipiac student-athletes to chip in on Quinnipiac Athletics' Positive Play initiative. Quinnipiac is dedicated to the promotion and development of service, service learning, experiential learning, and civic engagement programs and initiatives that involve students in the local community and challenge them to critically examine the role their service plays in cultivating personal development and social change.
The Bobcats will be back out on the court on Friday night down I-95 as Quinnipiac heads to play in-state foe Fairfield at 7 PM.
