FIRST SERVES
The Quinnipiac men's tennis team takes to the court this weekend for the first tournament of the fall season as they head to Brunswick, Maine for the Bowdoin Invitational, hosted by Bowdoin College.
WHO'S INVITED?
Quinnipiac is one of four teams headed up to the tournament where the Bobcats will compete against the Bowdoin Polar Bears and MAAC Rival Marist Red Foxes in a three-day round robin tournament
COACH OF THE YEAR
Head coach Christopher Pappas was honored in just his first season at the helm of the Quinnipiac men's tennis team as the MAAC men's tennis coach of the year after leading the team to the playoffs for the first time as a member of the conference. Pappas was the first Quinnipiac men's tennis coach to be honored as the coach of the year since 2010 when former head coach Mike Quitko was honored by the Northeast Conference.
BIG RETURNS
The Bobcats return eight players to this year's team after an impressive second year in the MAAC. Among the returners are Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) and Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany), who represented the top two spots in the Bobcats rotation.
RECORD YEAR
Last season marked a big year for the Quinnipiac men's tennis program as the Bobcats qualified for their first MAAC Tournament in program history. Their 11 wins also marked the most for a Quinnipiac men's tennis team since the 2005-06 season when they recorded 13 on the way to a NCAA Tournament berth. The Bobcats also finished with 201 combined victories between the individual singles and doubles competition, marking the most victories in a season in program history. Of the 201 combined victories, the Bobcats won 143 singles matches, also a new program record
KEEP 'EM COMING
The Bobcats were led by some strong individual performances throughout the 2014-15 season, bringing a wealth of success to the program. For the first time in program history, four different men's tennis players recorded at least 30 victories on the season. Ezaka, Kuwert, Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) and former men's tennis player Eric Ambrosio were among the top performers for the Bobcats. Looking at singles play, Ambrosio, Rozenstein and Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) picked up an impressive 20 victories to lead the Bobcats individually.
DUAL LEADERSHIP
Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) and Ben Teicher (Kendall Park, New Jersey) have been named the captains of the Quinnipiac men's tennis team for the 2015-16 season. Roser had a breakout year in 2014-15 last season, picking up a career-high 29 wins, 19 singles wins and tied his career-high with 10 doubles wins. Teicher has been an impactful player on and off the court for the Bobcats, as he was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete for the second straight season.
KEI'S WAY
Ezaka returns to the Bobcats for his junior season after picking up an All-MAAC Second Team selection at No. 1 singles. For the second straight season, Ezaka won at least 30 matches, going 34-24 and is now 70-45 through his first two seasons. He also went 7-4 in conference play, among the team leaders for the Bobcats. During last fall, Ezaka reached the semifinals of the Connecticut State Championships held in October.
IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Quinnipiac men's tennis received a huge transfer as Kuwert came to the Bobcats from OId Dominion. In his first season with the program, Kuwert was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, All-MAAC Second Team at No. 2 singles, and was the team MVP. Kuwert competed right away, posting a 31-28 record for the Bobcats. His career-high win totals nearly matched his first two seasons in collegiate tennis.
FORMIDDABLE FRESHMAN SEASONS
Alper, Rozenstein and Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) all made positive impacts on the Quinnipiac men's tennis team in their first seasons with the program, combining to win 91 matches. Alper went 28-17, Rozenstein finished 34-18 and van Biezen picked up 29-12. Rozenstein capped off his freshman season as he was named to the All-MAAC Second Team at No. 4 singles.
