BOSTON, Mass. – Quinnipiac senior Danny Federico (Acton, Massachusetts) and sophomore Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) were announced as semi-finalists for the 63rd Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England.
The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston presents the nation's oldest nationally-recognized college hockey honor, the Walter Brown Award was established in 1953 by the members of the 1933 Massachusetts Rangers, the first American team ever to win the World Championship Tournament. Brown coached the Rangers to the title in Prague, Czechoslovakia, that year; the team defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime in the championship game.
Federico is a senior defenseman and co-captain for the Bobcats. The fourth-year blue-liner has laced the skates for 119 games, accumulating a goal and 33 assists in that span. This season, Federico has totaled seven assists in 25 games. Last season, he was recognized by the ECAC Hockey league as a finalist for the Best Defensive Defenseman Award after leading the league with a +19 plus/minus rating and was one of 13 players in the league with 50 or more blocked shots. This season, he's tied for ninth in plus/minus at +8 while also sixth with 41 blocked shots.
Anas currently leads Quinnipiac in goals (16) and points (30), and is one of five players in ECAC Hockey with 30 or more points to date. His 16 goals also rank third among all ECAC Hockey players while his eight power-play goals lead the league. Anas also boasts five multiple-goal games and nine with multiple points. Anas is coming off a banner freshman campaign that saw him honored with the Tim Taylor Award by the Hockey Commissioner's Association as the National Rookie of the Year, while also earning national honors from USCHO.com and College Hockey News. He was also named the ECAC Hockey co-Rookie of the Year and the George C. Carens Rookie of the Year by the New England Hockey Writers Association. For his career, Anas sits at 38 goals and 35 assists for 73 points in 66 games.
