Quinnipiac
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team returns to action after a one-week break from final exams when it plays a road game at Pac-12 foe Oregon State on Monday evening at 9 p.m. (EST).
The contest will be the completion of a three-game series, which saw Oregon State visit Hamden last year, becoming the first power conference team to play a road game at Quinnipiac since the Bobcats moved to Division I in 1998-99. Quinnipiac defended its home court against the Beavers a year ago, pulling off a 60-52 win behind 24 points from graduated senior Zaid Hearst.
It will be a new look Bobcats team that travels to Corvallis this year, though, as all five starters in last year's win over Oregon State are gone (four graduated seniors and one transfer). By contrast, the Beavers have all five starters from last year's meeting with Quinnipiac returning this year.
Quinnipiac and Oregon State are both led by senior guards with the same scoring average coming into the game. Quinnipiac senior Giovanni McLean is averaging 16.6 points per contest and has scored in double figures in all eight games he has played in for the Bobcats. Oregon State senior Gary Payton II, son of Hall of Fame point guard Gary Payton (who also played at Oregon State), is also averaging 16.6 points per game for the Beavers.
Last year's meeting saw the Bobcats put a signature effort on the boards, outrebounding Oregon State 46-27. Quinnipiac has been among the nation's leaders in rebounding in each of the last five years, including leading the nation in rebounding margin in each of the last two. This year, the Bobcats rank second nationally in offensive rebounds through Saturday's games, behind only West Virginia, which snapped Quinnipiac's streak of four seasons in a row leading the nation in offensive rebounding last year.
Some new faces have helped the Bobcats continue to be strong on the boards this year, especially after an injury to leading rebounder Chaise Daniels. Junior forward Donovan Smith is averaging 6.6 rebounds per game, while freshman Abdulai Bundu (pictured) has had some big efforts on the glass as well, including nine in Quinnipiac's last game against Boston University.
After facing Oregon State, the Bobcats will have an eight-day break for the holidays before another road game against Maine on Dec. 29 to conclude non-conference play. Corvallis, Oregon and Orono, Maine are separated by 3,337.7 miles (by car) and would take 50 hours to drive, according to Google Maps. making it the longest drive between two Division I schools in the continental United States.
