HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, New York – The Quinnipiac University women's golf team led through the first round of the Fourth Annual St. John's Invitational at The Saint Andrews Golf Course in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. The Bobcats' freshmen trio of Luciana Tobia (La Paz, Bolivia), Caitlan Blydenburgh (Castleton, New York) and Julia Kemmling (Berlin, Connecticut) finished in the top five.
"This has been described by many as one of the toughest course that they have ever played," head coach John O'Connor said. "There are spectacular views and tremendous elevation change – it's an absolutely beautiful golf course. We're very fortunate to be part of this tournament and we played against against some very good competition."
The Bobcats combined to shoot a first-round 325 (+37) and led Hofstra and St. John's who finished at 336 (+48) and tied for second. Hartford (337, +49) was a stroke behind Hofstra and St. John's while Sacred Heart (339, +51) and St. Francis Brooklyn (375, +87) filled out the six-team bracket.
"We had a very good day today, " O'Connor said. "Luciana [Tobia] was the stand-out as she finished in second place. I'm very proud of the team today. All-in-all, I'm very pleased with today's results."
Tobia led the Bobcats again with a 77 (+5) and was five strokes back behind leader Anna Kim from St. John's, who shot a 72 for the first round. Tobia is coming off a tie for first-place finish at the Delaware State Invitational a week ago after an impressive tournament at the Quinnipiac Classic.
Blydenburgh finished with a 79 (+7) for a tie of third place. For Blydenburgh, it is her first sub-80 round out of her last six rounds on the course. It is also tied for her second-best round to date after shooting a 78 for the first round of the Navy Invitational, followed by a 79 for the second round and also at the Dartmouth Invitational.
Kemmling continues her strong play, carding an 80 (+8) at The Saint Andrews Club for a tie of fifth place. The first-year Bobcats has now shot 81 or better in seven consecutive rounds and 10 out of her last 11 times out.
Playing as an individual, Taylor Lambrou (Baldwin, New York) shot her best round of the season with an 82 (+10) to finish in eighth place. Lambrou entered the tournament with an 85.60 average and shed three strokes off of her per-round clip. Lambrou has now shot 82 or better in three of her last four rounds after shooting 81 and 82 for the first rounds of the Quinnipiac Classic.
Quinnipiac returns to action tomorrow at The Saint Andrews Golf Club for the final round of its fall schedule.
