SAINT CLOUD, Minnesota – The nationally-ranked No. 14 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team salvaged a split against St. Cloud State with a convincing 4-1 win at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in Saint Cloud, Minnesota. Sophomore Tim Clifton scored twice for Quinnipiac in the win, which brings the Bobcats' record to 13-6-1 overall while SCSU drops to 7-10-1.
The Bobcats got on the board midway through the first period with a shorthanded goal by Schutt. The Bobcats were playing a man down after a cross checking call on Connor Clifton. Peca forced a turnover deep in the Bobcats' defensive zone and carried the puck up-ice. After crossing the blue line into the Huskies' defensive zone and picking up a defender, he dropped the puck back to Barron with a beautiful between-the-legs pass. Barron skated between the face-off circles and drew a defender of his own before slipping the puck back between his legs as well, to Schutt who collected the puck and wristed a shot past Charlie Lindgren to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
Schutt's - who was playing in his home state for the first time in his collegiate career - netted his second goal of the season while Peca picked up his fourth point in as many games to give him a team-leading 13 assists on the year. He added his 14th late in the third period.
Early in the third period, Clifton gave Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead with his sixth goal of the season. Barron started the play, feeding Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) who moved the puck to Clifton at the blue line. Clifton threw a shot on goal and then picked up his own rebound before blasting a shot by Lindgren, tucking it just inside the near-side post to give Quinnipiac a two-goal lead. Barron's two-assist night gives him his second two-point game of the season while MacMaster converts on his fourth assist of the season.
Midway through the third period, Clifton scored his second of the game when he tipped a blast from the point by Justin Agosta (East Meadow, New York) past Lindgren to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead. MacMaster started the play when he dug the puck out the corner and zipped it to Derek Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota) at the point. Smith turned and sent it to the opposite point for Agosta's one-timer. The goal pushed Clifton's total to seven on the year.
With less than four minutes to play in regulation, St. Cloud's leading scorer Jonny Brodsinski scored his team-leading 11th goal of the year, shorthanded, to put the Huskies on the board late in the game. St. Denis pushed the Bobcats lead back to three goals with an empty-netter in the closing seconds with Peca and Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) picking up assists.
