MOON TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania – Taryn Baumgardt (Innisfail, Alberta) scored the game-winning goal for the Bobcats just 1:10 into overtime as the No. 4/4 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team survived a 3-2 victory over the Robert Morris Colonials Friday afternoon at 84 Lumber Arena.
Morgan Fritz-Ward (Mason City, Iowa) carried the puck into the neutral zone where she dumped off a pass to Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York). Cianfarano then took the puck into the offensive zone along the boards with Fritz-Ward skating past Cianfarano through the slot to create space. The space was plenty, as Cianfarano found Baumgardt streaking in on the left side and buried the puck in the wide open left side of the net.
It was Baumgardt's second goal of the season as Fritz-Ward picked up her 12th assist and Cianfarano tallied her ninth assist of the season. The goal was also Baumgardt's first game-winning goal of her career.
The last overtime game-winner for the Bobcats came on March 2, 2013 when Amanda Colin scored in the third overtime of an ECAC Quarterfinal game to give the Bobcats a 3-2 victory over the St. Lawrence Saints.
Cianfarano scored the game-tying goal for the Bobcats with just 5:58 remaining in the third period and two seconds remaining on the power play. The goal was Cianfarano's 13th of the season and second power play goal of the year.
Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Michigan) inched closer to the 100 point margin with her ninth goal of the season in the second period for her 97th career point. The goal was Darkangelo's 55th of her career.
Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) reached the 90-point plateau with her 14th assist of the season while Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) notched her sixth assist and Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) recorded her 10th assist of the year.
Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minnesota) earned her 19th win of the season between the pipes for the Bobcats as she recorded 18 saves in the victory.
The Bobcats outshot the Colonials 47-20 in the game, recording more than 40 shots for the first time since Oct. 18 against Maine. Quinnipiac buckled down defensively after the first period, outshooting Robert Morris 31-10 in the final 41:10 of the game. Overall, Quinnipiac attempted 92 total shots and Robert Morris blocked 30 of Quinnipiac's shots.
For the first time all season, an opponent scored first in a game as Robert Morris took a 1-0 lead with 5:02 remaining in the first period. An icing put the puck in Quinnipiac's defensive zone where Robert Morris won the face off back to Mikaela Lowater whose shot was saved by Laden. The rebound kicked out to the left side of the goal where Mackenzie Johnston collected the puck in the left corner and skated the puck into the left faceoff circle. Johnston found Anissa Gamble in the slot where she controlled the puck and shot low, glove side past Laden.
Darkangelo tied the game for the Bobcats with 11:44 remaining in the second period to shift momentum back in the Bobcats favor. Roesler wristed a shot from the right point and the rebound kicked out to Kosta positioned to the left of the goal. With Robert Morris goaltender Jessica Dodds sliding to that side, Kosta shifted the puck back to the right side of the slot to Darkangelo who gathered the puck and tapped it home.
The Colonials took a 2-1 lead early in the third period with their 12th power play goal of the season. After Kosta went to the penalty box on a slashing penalty, Maddie Collias dug the puck out of the corner and skated it to the point where she found Rebecca Vint open next to the net. Vint quickly passed the puck across the front of the crease to Johnston who one-timed the puck past Laden.
Quinnipiac got the equalizer with a power play goal of their own when Cianfarano scored with 5:58 remaining in the third period for the Bobcats' ninth power play goal of the season. Tamberg controlled the puck at the right point and fired the puck towards the net. Woods and Cianfarano were skating in on and Woods used her skate direct the puck to Cianfarano who tipped the puck past Dodds for the game-tying goal.
The Bobcats got the game-tying goal from Baumgardt just 1:10 into the overtime period, as the defenseman hustled from the defensive zone to the open spot in the left faceoff circle.
Quinnipiac and Robert Morris resume their weekend series with another afternoon matchup at 3:05 P.M. on Saturday at 84 Lumber Arena.
