Worcester, Mass. – The Quinnipiac men's soccer team fell to Holy Cross on Wednesday night, 2-1. After a strong defensive performance against Army and a 0-0 tie, the Bobcats surrendered two goals at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. Junior Tanor Jobe (Uxbridge, Mass.) scored the lone goal for Quinnipiac in the final two minutes of play.
Holy Cross scored the first goal in the 31st minute after a defensive miscue by the Bobcats. Freshman midfielder Justin Carfora stole the ball from Quinnipiac inside the box and recorded the first goal of his young career. Carfora registered his third point of the night later in the game, feeding Joey DeVivo in the 69th minute. DeVivo, the 2013 Crusader leading scorer, also tallied his first of the season with a shot to the lower right corner from 14 yards out. Ty Goncalves was also rewarded with the assist.
In the 89th minute, Tobias Esche (Bremen, Germany) fired a shot at goal but was stopped by Holy Cross goalkeeper Kevin Wright. Central Connecticut transfer Tanor Jobe was there for the put-back to register his first points as a Bobcat. Esche notched his fourth assist and sixth point of his career.
Quinnipiac was unable to capitalize on six shots and six corner kicks. James Doig led all Bobcats with two shots on goal. John-John Diaz, Machel Baker, James Greco and Esche had the other attempts for QU.
Quinnipiac drops to 5-7-1 all-time against the Holy Cross Crusaders. The Bobcats entered the match-up having won their last four meetings with Holy Cross. In 2007, Quinnipiac escaped with a 1-0 victory on the road, followed by a 2-1 triumph at home in 2008. After a three-year hiatus, the Bobcats renewed the rivalry in 2012 with a 2-1 victory in Worcester. Hosting the Crusaders last season at home, QU took advantage of an 80th minute penalty kick to secure a 1-0 victory. The series' first began back in the 1997 season.
Up next, the Bobcats return home for three consecutive games starting with Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 20th at 3:00 p.m. Quinnipiac will then take six days off before hosting Yale on Friday, Sept. 26th at 4:00 p.m. They will wrap up their home stand with the start of conference play against Niagara at the QU Soccer Field on Tuesday, Sept. 30th at 2:00 p.m.
