STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac women's cross country team opened their 2014 season with a 3rd place finish at the Stony Brook Invitational. In a race dominated by the Bobcats' underclassmen contingent, six of the top seven finishers for Quinnipiac were freshmen runners including two first-year Bobcats (70 points) who each placed in the Top 10. The host Seawolves took first place with 19 points while Sacred Heart placed second with 56 points.
Head coach Carolyn Martin decided to unleash 12 of her 13 underclassmen on Saturday in the Bobcats' first meet of the season. At the top of the class in the debut was a pair of freshmen as Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Conn.) as they placed in 7th and 8th, respectively.
On a roster without any seniors, Martin entrusted in her talented freshmen and sophomores, all of which came up with great individual efforts. Wolff led the way on Saturday as she earned a Top 10 finish in her Quinnipiac debut, crossing the finish line with a time of 15:01.92. Her triumph was also made more significant as she was the fourth-fastest underclassmen and second-fastest freshmen among all 69 runners.
Not far behind Wolff was her classmate Roberts, who placed 8th overall in her first race as a Bobcat. A local product out of Higganum, Conn., Roberts packed up with Wolff and crossed the line with a time of 15:02.84, just .92 seconds behind her fellow classmate.
Sophomore Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Conn.) had herself a career day as she finished the meet in 16th place overall with a time of 16:01.70. Chaplen finished as the third-fastest Bobcat, besting her previous career high as the seventh-fastest Bobcat, by quite some margin.
The run of Quinnipiac freshmen continued as Harmony Grodsky (Upper Brooklyn, N.Y.) packed up with Chaplen and finished in 17th place. Grodsky's time of 16:03.84 was just over two seconds behind Chaplen's time as the two combined to navigate well through the field of 69 competitors.
Rounding out the Bobcats' top seven runners were three more freshmen in Katey Veron (Franklin Square, N.Y.), Marykate O'Meara (Pearl River, N.Y.) and Darby Ginley (Warwick, N.Y.). All three crossed the line within 10 seconds of one another as Veron (23rd, 16:16.58), O'Meara (26th, 16:23.21) and Ginley (16:25.72) all shined in their Quinnipiac debut.
The Bobcats will look to continue to impress next week as the team will travel down to Smithfield, R.I. on Saturday, Sept. 6 for the Bryant Invitational set to begin at 10:30 am.
