SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Quinnipiac women's cross country team placed fifth at the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Race hosted by Bryant University on Saturday morning. The Bobcats' benefited greatly from the 2014 season debuts of sophomore Niamh Ashe (East Islip, N.Y.) and junior Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, N.J.) as the pair both placed in the Top 20 overall. Boston University finished first in the team standings with 45 points while Quinnipiac earned the fifth place result with 127 points.
"We really ran well today considering many of the upperclassmen were running in their first competitive meet of the season," said assistant coach Chris Dickerson. "Our girls ran a smart race and moved up throughout the competition. They executed our game plan very well and we're all very happy going into the Monmouth Invitational in a couple weeks."
Making her first career appearance in the Nassaney Memorial Race, Ashe picked up right where she left off last season. A year after placing as the fastest Bobcat in all five meets in which she competed in 2013, Ashe kickstarted 2014 strong finishing first among all Quinnipiac runners. The 2013 All-New England and All-MAAC competitor finished the meet in 15th place with a time of 18:56.2.
Ashe's streak of six straight first place finishes among Bobcat runners almost came to an end with Campbell's strong 2014 debut. The Bobcats' junior nearly outkicked Ashe at the end as the two finished the day strong at the top of the competition. Campbell placed 16th on Saturday as she crossed the line just 0.1 seconds behind Ashe with a time of 18:56.3. In her second career appearance in the Nassaney Memorial Race, Campbell finished 17 spots higher than her 2012 Nassaney Memorial as well as more than 14 seconds faster (33rd, 19:10.4 in 2012).
Three more of the Bobcats' upperclassmen contingent rounded out their top five helped contribute to the strong day on Saturday as juniors Medinah Nabadduka (Windsor, Conn.), Chelsea Savage (Pembroke, Mass.) and Ashley Carle (Jackson, N.J.) each finished as the third, fourth and fifth fastest Bobcats, respectively. Nabadduka came out with a strong showing as she scored a 28th place finish with a time of 19:33.1. Savage and Carle packed up well and placed 33rd and 35th, respectively. Savage crossed the line in 19:50.2 while Carle finished with a time of 19:56.4.
The Bobcats will next return to action on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10:45 am with the Monmouth Invitational, a crucial meet for Quinnipiac as they'll be running at the site of the 2014 MAAC Championship (Holmdel Park).
