HAMDEN, Conn – Nationally-ranked No. 14 Quinnipiac lost to the University of Massachusetts, 3-2, in a non-confernece match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. The loss drops Quinnipiac to 8-4-1 on the season while UMass improves to 4-8-0.
Alex Barron (Glendora, California) scored both of Quinnipiac's goals, while Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario), Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado), Travis St. Denis (Trail, Brisith Columbia) and Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) all had assists for Quinnipiac. Barron became the fourth Bobcat player this season to record a multiple-goal game, joining Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland), Landon Smith and St. Denis. He's also just the 14th defenseman to post a two-goal game this season. Peca now has assists in consecutive games and four in his last four games. Nationally, he ranks fourth in the category, through Friday night's games.
Quinnipiac outshot Massachusetts, 44-24, and had another 22 shots blocked by the Minutemen - good for the second most this season by a Bobcats' opponent since UConn blocked 25 shots on Oct. 21, 2014.
Barron put Quinnipiac out in front with his first goal of the season and third of his career late in the first period. Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) dug the puck out of the corner to the right of UMass goalie Henry Dill and handed it off to Travis St. Denis (Trail, British Columbia) along the half boards. St. Denis then found some open ice and back-handed a pass to Barron who was all alone just above the face-off dot. Barron walked in and sniped a shot over the right shoulder of Dill to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, UMass found itself on the power play after a hooking call on Quinnipiac. UMass worked the puck around the perimeter of the Bobcats defensive zone before Patrick Lee sent the puck behind the Bobcats goal. Ray Pigozzi picked up the puck, skated out along the goal line before feeding Steve Iacobellis on the door step for the one-timer to tie the game at 1-1.
Seven minutes into the second period, UMass took the lead when Maddison Smiley took control of the puck in the neutral zone and sent the puck up-ice to Pigozzi. Skating 3-on-1 on Quinnipiac's Garteig, Pigozzi fed Frank Vatrano to the left of Garteig for the one-timer as UMass took a 2-1 lead with most of the period to play. UMass took a 3-1 lead less thanminute into the third period on a goal by Troy Power that was set-up by Dennis Kravchenko and Patrick Lee.
With less than two minutes to play, Barron picked up a rebound off a Landon Smith shot and banged home his second goal of the night to double his career total of two that he started the night with. Peca picked up his team-leading 11th assist of the year on the goal.
The Bobcats and Minutemen complete their two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 29 when Quinnipiac travels up I-95 to the Mullins Center in Amherst, Massachusetts for a 7 p.m. start.
