Hamden, Conn. – The No. 4/4 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team came from behind to tie the St. Lawrence Saints Saturday night to extend its program-best unbeaten streak to 12 games to begin the 2014-15 season.
It was the first game all season in which the Bobcats played while trailing but were able to come back thanks to Nicole Connery's (Newmarket, Ontario) third period heroics.
Connery scored her seventh goal of the season to tie Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) for the team-lead in goals. Connery has now recorded a point in seven of the past eight games.
Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) also found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season and third consecutive game in which she's scored a goal.
Quinnipiac goaltender Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minnesota) picked up her first tie of the season as she recorded the most saves of any game with 17. Laden now sits at 10-0-1 on the season and was the last goaltender of qualifiers in the country to pick up anything other than a win.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when Emma Woods stole the puck in the offensive end and skated towards the right faceoff circle where she wristed the puck high over St. Lawrence goaltender Carmen MacDonald's shoulder. MacDonald finished with 24 saves in goal for St. Lawrence.
Brooke Webster evened things up for the Saints just 38 seconds into the second period as she cleaned up the rebound of Jacqueline Wand's initial shot that Laden kicked out low to the slot and Webster skated in tap the puck home for her ninth goal of the season
St. Lawrence (7-5-2, 4-2-1 ECAC Hockey) and Quinnipiac (10-0-2, 5-0-1 ECAC Hockey) remained tied until there were just over five minutes remaining in the second period when St. Lawrence took a 2-1 lead and hand Quinnipiac its first deficit of the season. Kayla Raniwsky collected the puck behind the net before she shifted a pass to Kailee Heidersbach just to the side of the net. Heidersbach attempted a wraparound shot but it sailed into the slot where Jenna Marks roofed the puck past Laden.
The Bobcats trailed for the next fifteen minutes of game time until Nicole Connery tied things up for good midway through the third period. Morgan Fritz-Ward skated with the puck from the neutral zone into the left faceoff circle in the offensive zone before she centered the puck for Connery skating through the slot to tip home the game-tying goal.
During the overtime period, Quinnipiac outshot the Saints 4-3 but neither team could net a game-winner.
St. Lawrence had the lone power play of the game but could not convert and Quinnipiac did not get the man-advantage in a game for the first time all season long.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Princeton, New Jersey to take on the Tigers at Hobey Baker Rink with puck drop scheduled for 7 P.M.
