Quinnipiac University Director of Athletics and Recreation Jack
McDonald and Men's Basketball Head Coach Tom
Moore have announced that former NBA World Champion and
University of Connecticut standout Scott Burrell has been named as
an assistant coach. Burrell's appointment recently was made
official although he has been assisting the men's basketball staff
for the past two months.
"I am happy to have the opportunity to start my college coaching
career here at Quinnipiac," Burrell said. "The fact that I'll be
able to do that in my hometown of Hamden makes it even better. I've
watched Quinnipiac grow as a University. It's a beautiful campus
and the TD Banknorth Sports Center is a beautiful facility. I hope
that I can help Coach Moore and his staff bring Quinnipiac
basketball to another level."
Burrell, a native of Hamden, Conn., joins the Bobcats after a
successful professional career in which he played for the Charlotte
Hornets, Golden State Warriors, Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets
from 1993 until 2001. During his eight seasons in the NBA Burrell
averaged 6.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game while
shooting 41.6 percent from the field. He became the first former
University of Connecticut player to win an NBA Championship ring
with the Bulls in 1998.
Most recently, Burrell was an assistant coach with the Colorado
14ers of the NBA Developmental League. Before joining the 14ers,
Burrell spent the previous five years playing professionally in
Japan, Spain, the Philippines and China.
"I'm very excited to have Scott joins us. His excellence at every
level of basketball he's played should serve our program well,"
Moore said. "From his days as an outstanding athlete at Hamden High
School to his incredible career at UConn and then as an NBA
Champion with the Chicago Bulls, Scott has always handled himself
in a first class and professional manner."
Burrell, the only athlete ever to be a first-round draft pick in
two sports, was selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the 20th
pick overall in the first round of the 1993 NBA Draft. A baseball
standout at Hamden High School, he was drafted in the first round
of the 1989 amateur baseball draft by the Seattle Mariners, but
chose to attend the University of Connecticut instead. Burrell was
later selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round of the
1990 draft and pitched in their minor league system for three
summers.
Burrell was also the first player in NCAA Division I history to top 1,500 points, 750 rebounds, 275 assists and 300 steals for his career. During his four seasons at UConn (1989-1993) he averaged 13.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while shooting 42.6 percent from the field. He set a UConn record with 310 career steals and graduated as the school's second all-time leader in blocked shots while also finishing eighth on the Huskies' all-time scoring list.
