KINGSTON, Rhode Island – The Quinnipiac baseball team heads to Rhode Island to take on the Rams on Wednesday, April 8th, in midweek, non-conference action. The first pitch from Bill Beck Field is slated for 3 PM.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Bobcats dropped two out of three games to the Niagara Purple Eagles in Hamden last weekend.
- In the opening game of the series, the Bobcats fell 8-6. Quinnipiac's comeback fell short as they were shut down for the final two innings of the game.
- Game two was a low-scoring affair, with the Purple Eagles holding on for a 4-3 win. Quinnipiac took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning thanks to a solo home run from Christian Smith, but a pair of solo blasts for Niagara's Curtis McKay sealed the win for Niagara.
- The Bobcats were able to avoid the sweep, defeating the Purple Eagles 4-3 in the series finale. A solid pitching performance from Sam Wright (7.0 IP, 4H, 1ER, 3K) set the Bobcats up for success.
HISTORY VS. RHODE ISLAND
- Wednesday's matchup will mark the 27th time the Bobcats and Rams will face off since March 16th, 2001.
- Rhode Island leads the all-time series, 22-4.
- Earlier this season (March 24th), the Rams defeated the Bobcats by a final score of 17-5 in Hamden. Quinnipiac finished the game with five runs on five hits, while committing four errors in the field.
SCOUTING THE RAMS
- The Rhode Island Rams enter the contest with an 11-18 overall record and a 7-5 record in conference play. The Rams currently sit in fourth place in the A10.
- Rhode Island has the eighth-highest batting average in the A10 (.260) as a team and ranks ninth in ERA (6.73). On the defensive side, the Rams have committed the fourth fewest errors in their league with 33 this season.
- The Rams are currently on a four-game winning streak and are 4-3 since their last meeting against the Bobcats.
- Rhode Island is coming off a three-game series sweep over A10 foe, VCU. The Rams outscored VCU 16-8 in the series as they improved to 7-5 in conference play.
- Reece Moroney leads the URI offense with a .388 batting average in 29 starts this season. Moroney leads the team with 24 RBIs and has recorded four steals in five attempts. Against the Bobcats this season, Moroney went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
- Connor Grotyohann got the start against the Bobcats in the last matchup earlier this season. Grotyohann has made eight appearances this season and holds a 2.08 ERA in 8.2 innings pitched. Against the Bobcats, Grotyohann pitched two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

PRESEASON ACCOLADES
- The Quinnipiac Baseball team was picked to finish 3rd in the MAAC Preseason Poll after last season ended in the MAAC Semifinal round against the Rider Broncs.
- Christian Smith was named to the Preseason All-MAAC team as he returns to Hamden.
- Smith finished the year with a .329 batting average in 56 contests. Smith tied for the team lead in home runs with 15 and led the Bobcats with 67 runs batted in.
- Smith had a tremendous MAAC Tournament last season, finishing the week with a .375 clip (6-for-16), while driving in nine runs in the five games in Pomona, earning him a nod on the All-Tournament team.
KEY RETURNERS
- The Bobcats return 19 players from last year's team, with of those players seeing game action.
- Of those returners, nine are pitchers: J.C. Franconere, Sam Wright, Griffin Seibel, Mike Poncini, Matt Alduino, Nick Balcom, Andrew Rubayo, Josh Lajoie, and Mason Ulsh.
- Ten position players return: Cole Constable, Kyle Garbowski, Sam Ametrano, Christian Smith, Alex Irizarry, Luke Zeisloft, James Marino, Matt Park, Ian Nilsen, and Christian Nilsen.
LOTS OF NEW FACES
- Quinnipiac welcomes 16 new faces to its campus this season.
- The Bobcats used the transfer portal to bring in sophomore right-handed pitcher Maddex Labuda (Liberty), junior outfield/first baseman Jack Balcer (Widener), senior right-handed pitcher James Pazdera, and graduate outfielder Brendan Edvardsen (AIC).
- Quinnipiac also brought in 12 first years, with six being pitchers and six being position players, Peyton Vancas (Pleasant Gap, Pa.), Timothy Park (Bridgewater, NJ.), Chase Camac (Northfield, NJ.), Caden Williamson (Broomfield, Co.), Teagan Beames (New Fairfield, Conn.), Brayden Hromada (Center Moriches, NY.), Joseph Hiller (Center Moriches, NY.), Kevin Rusinak (Manalapan, NJ.), Ethan Freed (Limerick, Pa.), Frank Orrei (Verona, NJ.), Langdon Hazen (Underhill, VT.), and Jacob Belecky (Komoka, Ontario, Canada).
NEXT TIME OUT
- The Bobcats return to MAAC play as they head to Poughkeepsie, New York, to take on the Marist Red Foxes in a three-game set.
