Wright Shuts Down Niagara Offense in 4-3 Win

Hamden, Conn. – The Quinnipiac Bobcats took the series finale from the Niagara Purple Eagles, 4-3, to avoid the sweep. With the win, the Bobcats improved to 13-16 overall and 6-6 in MAAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Niagara opened the scoring in the first inning as Jacob Brooks came in to score on a Noah Konings groundout to third base.
Quinnipiac knotted the game up in the second inning as Cole Constable reached on a throwing error, allowing Brendan Edvardsen to come around to score.
The Bobcats and Purple Eagles remained tied until the Bobcats came up to bat in the fifth inning. With two runners on, Alex Irizarry delivered with a double down the right field line, scoring Christian Smith and giving the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Peyton Vancas punched a single into right field to bring home Jack Balcer with the second run of the inning. With the bases loaded, Constable drew a walk to force in another run as the Bobcats opened a 4-1 lead.
Niagara was able to score two runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it a one-run game.
After Quinnipiac was held off the board in the bottom half of the eighth, Matt Alduino shut the door in the top of the ninth as Quinnipiac took the series finale, 4-3.

NEWS AND NOTES
- Seven different Bobcats recorded hits in the win against Niagara, with two recording multiple hits.
- Cole Constable recorded two RBIs in three at-bats. Constable is up to ten RBIs on the season.
- Jack Balcer went 2-for-3 at the dish with a run scored and two walks. Balcer is hitting .315 in his first season in Hamden.
- Peyton Vancas went 2-for-4 in the win with a couple of stellar plays in the field. Vancas recorded an RBI in the series finale, pushing his season total to 18, which is tied for third on the team.
- Alex Irizarry had a big RBI double in the fifth inning, recording his third double of the season and 22nd RBI.
- Christian Smith went 1-for-4 at the dish in the win. Smith has recorded a hit in twelve of the last thirteen games he has appeared in.
- Caden Williamson extended his on-base streak to 18 as he went 1-for-4 at the plate.
- Sam Wright had his best start of the season, going seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits.
- Matt Alduino recorded his fourth save of the season as he pitched the final 2.0 innings. Alduino lowered his ERA to 1.89 and his WHIP to 0.84.
- Quinnipiac is 2-6 in one-run games and 2-1 in two-run games this season.
