HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac Men's Tennis is looking to repeat in the MAAC Tennis Championships this weekend at the Mercer County Park Tennis Center.
The Bobcats finished the regular season 10-11 with a perfect 8-0 mark in league play, winning their first MAAC Regular Season Championship since joining the league in 2013-14. QU will face No. 5 Niagara, who won their quarterfinals match over No. 4 seed Mount St. Mary's 4-1, at 10:00 AM tomorrow morning. The Bobcats defeated Niagara 4-3 in the regular season with wins from Finn Burridge, Carlos Braun Simo, Elias Hoxha, and Alex Yang.

The Bobcats finished the regular season 10-11 with a perfect 8-0 mark in league play, winning their first MAAC Regular Season Championship since joining the league in 2013-14. The Bobcats defeated Niagara 4-3 in the regular season with wins from Finn Burridge, Carlos Braun Simo, Elias Hoxha, and Alex Yang.
MEN'S TENNIS EARNS FOUR ALL-LEAGUE HONORS
- Graduate student Daniel Velek and first year Elias Hoxha each were named to the All-MAAC Singles First Team, after each won the MAAC Player of the Week award this season.
- Finn Burridge and Carlos Braun Simo each were named All-MAAC Second Team Singles, both getting their second All-MAAC nods in as many seasons at QU.
- Between the four, they posted a combined MAAC record of 26-6, leading QU to their first outright MAAC regular season title.
- After already clinching the MAAC regular season crown, QU was still able to take care of business at Fairfield, winning five singles matches.
- Daniel Velek, Carlos Braun Simo, Elias Hoxha, and Vishal Prakash each won in straights sets while Finn Burridge won his match 6-3 in the third set.
- Hoxha went 3-0 between singles and doubles, staying undefeated at 7-0 in singles.
- On Saturday, Hoxha defeated Mount's Evans 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles after teaming up with Alex Yang to win their No. 2 doubles match over Mount 6-3.
- Against Sacred Heart, Hoxha won his No. 4 singles match in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 and his doubles match went unfinished as the Bobcats had clinched the doubles point.
- QU swept Sacred Heart on Sunday evening 7-0 to clinch the regular season championship.
- It is QU's first outright regular season championship since joining the MAAC.
- It's seven wins are program record since joining the MAAC.
- Daniel Velek improved to 5-2 in MAAC play, giving him a career record of 11-2 at No. 1 singles.
- QU took the doubles point with wins from Finn Burridge / Carlos Braun Simo and Elias Hoxha / Alex Yang.
- Velek, Hoxha, Prakash, and Yang each won their singles matches in straight sets to clinch the win for QU.
- Velek went 2-0 for QU over the weekend, helping propel them to a 5-2 win over Siena.
- Velek first teamed up James Lorenzetti and won their No. 2 singles match over Siena's Breen and Varella 6-2. He then won his No. 1 singles match over Martinez 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
- Last Friday, QU defeated Siena 5-2 to move to 5-0 in the MAAC play.
- QU got the doubles point on wins from Daniel Velek / James Lorenzetti and Elias Hoxha / Alex Yang while also winning four singles matches.
- Velek fought back after losing his second set to win in three at No. 1 singles while Finn Burridge, Carlos Braun Simo, and Elias Hoxha each won dominantly in straight sets.
- Graduate student Daniel Velek was tabbed for two MAAC awards on Wednesday afternoon, first being named Male Student-Athlete of the Week as well as MAAC Tennis Player of the Week.
- He earned MAAC Tennis Player of the Week after going 3-1 between No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, teaming up with James Lorenzetti.
- In singles he defeated Merrimack's Gradski 6-4, 6-4 and Rider's Tangri, 6-2, 6-2. Velek and Lorenzetti's lone doubles win was 6-1 over Martinez and Thurgur of Rider.
- QU defeated both Merrimack and Rider this past weekend to move to 4-0 in the MAAC.
- The Bobcats defeated Merrimack 5-2 on singles wins from Daniel Velek, Carlos Braun Simo, Elias Hoxha, James Lorenzetti, and Alex Yang.
- They topped Rider 4-3 on Sunday, getting singles wins from Daniel Velek, Finn Burridge, Elias Hoxha, and Alex Yang in straight sets.
- Elias Hoxha and Alex Yang moved to 4-0 in MAAC singles play.
- Last weekend the Bobcats played their first outdoor matches, first traveling to play Marist, winning 5-2 to move 2-0 in the MAAC.
- They then defeated LIU at home 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.
- Alex Yang is currently on a three-match winning streak while James Lorenzetti and Daniel Velek have won their last four doubles matches.
- The tandems of Finn Burridge / Carlos Braun Simo and Daniel Velek / James Lorenzetti each won their second consecutive doubles matches to clinch the doubles point for QU.
- While Velek, Braun Simo, Elias Hoxha, and Alex Yang each won their singles matches as well.
- The doubles tandems of Finn Burridge and Carlos Braun Simo and Daniel Velek and James Lorenzetti each won their doubles matches to secure the doubles point for the Bobcats.
- Though, Lorenzetti was the lone Bobcat to go 2-0 on the day, winning his No. 5 singles match.
- Despite dropping the doubles point, Finn Burridge, Carlos Braun Simo, Elias Hoxha, and Alex Yang each won their singles matches to secure a 1-0 start in MAAC play.
- James Lorenzetti and Elias Hoxha each won their matches in third set tiebreakers against Bryant.
- QU fell 4-1 to Monmouth at home last weekend, with their lone point coming in doubles.
- The tandems of Elias Hoxha / Finn Burridge and Carlos Braun Simo / Alex Yang each won their doubles matches.
- Four of six singles matches went three sets but it wouldn't be enough for the Bobcats.
- The Bobcats have fallen in each Ivy League matchup this season, getting swept by Brown, UPenn, and Harvard and losing 6-1 at Cornell and Dartmouth.
- Alex Yang was the lone winner at Cornell, taking his first win as a Bobcat in straight sets.
- Csanad Nyaradi won his No. 6 singled match at Dartmouth in straight sets.
- Despite Daniel Velek and James Lorenzetti taking their match at No. 1 doubles, the Bobcats dropped the doubles point with Elias Hoxha and Finn Burridge falling in a tiebreaker in their match at No. 2 doubles.
- Prior to the Red Storm clinching the win, Daniel Velek and Finn Burridge were able to win the first sets of their matches.
- James Lorenzetti was the lone winner for the Bobcats over the weekend, taking the first set in his match at Penn State before his opponent retired.
- Elias Hoxha and Finn Burridge were able to win their No. 3 doubles match against NJIT but it wouldn't be enough to take the doubles point.
- Daniel Velek reached the Round of 16 in the fall ITA Regionals hosted by Harvard.
- Yasha Laskin and Carl Sjoholm also reached the round of 16 in doubles before falling to a pair from Siena.
- Finn Burridge and Carlos Braun Simo battled into the semifinals of the MAAC Masters Tournament in Hamden, Conn. two weeks ago.
- Both members of the duo also reached the quarterfinal round in the singles draw.
- QU won 19 matches over the course of the weekend in Fairfield.
- Elias Hoxha finished the tournament with five straight wins.
- The Bobcats won 11 matches over the two days last weekend.
- Finn Burridge and James Lorenzetti both won their matches against Yale while Carlos Braun Simo, Csanad Nyaradi, and Elias Hoxha won their matches against Brown.
- Finn Burridge / Carlos Braun Simo and Yasha Laskin / Csanad Nyaradi teamed up to win doubles matches over Brown.
- Donovan Brown won both of his matches against Merrimack, including teaming up with Carl Sjoholm to win a doubles match.
- Csanad Nyaradi and Elias Hoxha each won two singles matches.
- Quinnipiac men's tennis took home its first MAAC Championship in program history.
- They defeated Fairfield 4-2 on April 21, 2024 to gain their first NCAA berth since 2010.
- It was the fifth conference championship for the Bobcats overall, winning four in the NEC.
- QU went 14-11 overall and 5-1 in the MAAC.
- Daniel Velek, the defending MAAC Player of the Year, is returning for his final year in Hamden.
- Carlos Braun Simo was Quinnipiac's other first team singles selection, while Finn Burridge and Donovan Brown each made All-MAAC Second Team.
- Daniel Velek was also a first team doubles selection while Donovan Brown received a second team nod.
- The defending MAAC champs return six of eight players from season ago.
- Carlos Braun Simo, Donovan Brown, Finn Burridge, Yasha Laskin, Gaurav Mootha, Csanad Nyaradi, and Daniel Velek all return for the Bobcats.
- The Bobcats welcome four incoming First Years, Elias Hoxha, James Lorenzetti, Carl Sjoholm, Vishal Prakash.
- They also welcome transfer Alex Yang from SMU.
