Bobcats Sweep Doubleheader From the Warriors

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac Bobcats kicked off their three-game series against Merrimack by sweeping the doubleheader on Friday afternoon in Hamden. Quinnipiac came from behind to win game one, 7-5, and the Bobcats walked off the Warriors in the 11th inning in the second game to take the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
After a scoreless opening inning, Merrimack got on the board in the second inning as a run came home on a fielder's choice. The Bobcats were held off the board until the fourth inning when Johnny Knox reached on an infield single to score Sebastian Mueller and knot the game up at one.
In the fifth inning, Sebastian Mueller scored Kyle Garbowski on an RBI groundout to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. Merrimack responded with three runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Merrimack held a two-run lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. The Bobcats put up five runs in the inning to take a 7-4 lead. CJ Willis got the scoring started in the inning with a two-run double down the left-field line. Johnny Knox followed up with a two-run double of his own to make it 7-4 Bobcats. Jackson Bryan added another run with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
Merrimack got a run in the eighth inning with a solo home run, but that is as close as they would get as the Bobcats came from behind to defeat the Warriors.
GAME TWO
Alex Irizarry got the Bobcats on the board first in game two of the doubleheader as he brought home Sean McCulloch and CJ Willis on a two-run single in the opening inning.
Merrimack took the lead in the fourth inning on a three-run home run to right field. The Warriors would hold a 3-2 lead until the sixth inning.
Quinnipiac knotted the game up at three in their half of the sixth inning as Sebastian Mueller blasted a solo home run to left field.
The Bobcats kept the Warriors off the board in the seventh inning and took a 4-3 lead in the bottom half of the inning as Christian Smith hit a solo home run over the left-center field fence. Merrimack knotted the game up at four with a solo home run in the eighth inning.
Both sides couldn't score in the ninth as the game headed to extra innings. After a scoreless tenth inning, the Bobcats shut down the Warriors' attempt to plate a run in the eleventh inning. With a runner on second with one out in the inning, Alex Irizarry singled up the middle to score Sam Ametrano with the winning run to complete the doubleheader sweep.

- Seven Bobcats recorded at least one hit in the first game and six Bobcats recorded a hit in the game two win over Merrimack.
- Sebastian Mueller went 4-for-8 (.500) in the doubleheader, recording three hits in the second game.
- Mueller hit his second triple of the season in the opening game of the series and hit his ninth home run of the season in the second game of the doubleheader.
- CJ Willis picked up a hit in both games to push his hit streak to six games.
- After going hitless in the first game, Alex Irizarry picked up two big hits in the second game.
- Irizarry had the game-winning hit in the eleventh inning with an RBI single up the middle, giving him three RBIs in the game.
