HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac baseball team welcomes the Sacred Heart Pioneers to Hamden for a midweek contest on Tuesday, April 9th at 3 PM. After their home contest against Sacred Heart, the Bobcats will travel to face the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday, April 10th with first pitch slated for 3 PM.
HISTORY VS. SACRED HEART
- Tuesday's contest will mark the 50th time the two teams will be facing off.
- The Pioneers lead the all-time series, 25-24.
- The last time the two teams faced off, the Bobcats defended their home field and took down the Pioneers by a final score of 7-6 (May 16, 2023).
- The Pioneers enter Tuesday's matchup with a 15-13 overall record and a 12-3 record in NEC play.
- Sacred Heart is coming off an NEC series win (2-1) over Coppin State.
- The Pioneers won game one of the series, 18-9, thanks to four RBI days from Dante D'Amore and Ronan Donohue. After dropping the middle game of the series, 10-8, the Pioneers captured the series win with a 9-8 victory in 10 innings. Zack Kovalchik walked it off in the 10th inning with a solo homer to left field.
- Tim McGuire leads the Pioneers with a .304 batting average in 22 games played. McGuire leads the team with two triples, while also driving in 13 RBIs, best for fourth on the team.
- Charlie Costello has made nine appearances out of the bullpen for the Pioneers and boasts a 4.18 ERA. Costello has recorded 13 strikeouts in 28.0 innings pitched.
- Jake Babuschak has made eight starts for the Pioneers' pitching staff and has a 4.44 earned run average. Babuschak has pitched 48.2 innings and has recorded a 37 strikeouts, which is second most on the team.
- Wednesday's contest will mark the 23rd time the two teams will be facing off.
- The Rams lead the all-time series, 19-3.
- Quinnipiac defeated the Rams by a final score of 4-0 in Hamden on March 26th earlier this season.
- The Rams enter the midweek, non-conference matchup with a 7-17 overall record and a 2-4 record out of the A10 Conference.
- Rhode Island is coming off a A10 series win over the UMASS Minutemen, 2-1.
- The Rams opened the three-game set with a 6-1 win thanks to a three-RBI day for Jack Hopko. After they fell in game two, 4-2, Rhode Island won the rubber match by a final score of 5-3. Will Hindle and Scott Penney each drove in two runs to help propel the Rams over the Minutemen.
- Reece Moroney leads the Rams offense with a .295 batting average in 23 appearances with 22 starts. Moroney leads the team with seven stolen bases in eight attempts. At the dish, Moroney has one home run and eight RBIs on the season.
- Evan Maloney has made eight appearances and six starts for the Rams and holds a 3.86 ERA. Maloney has recorded 28 strikeouts on 35.0 innings pitched while having a 2-1 record.
- Quinnipiac won their first MAAC series of the year with their weekend sweep of the Iona Gaels.
- The Bobcats bats were hot in game one of the series as the team recorded 12 runs on 12 hits to defeat the Gaels, 12-3.
- In the middle game of the three-game series, the Bobcats scored a run in seven of their eight turns at bat to power Quinnipiac to a 9-5 win. Matt DeRosa had a big day at the plate as he drove in three runs.
- Quinnipiac came back to win the series finale, 6-4, thanks to a CJ Willis two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Bobcats in front.
- The Bobcats improved to 9-18 overall and hold a 3-6 MAAC record, which has them sitting in eighth place.
- Junior Keegan O'Connor enters his senior season.
- O'Connor was named to the All-MAAC First Team and NEIBA All-New England First Team
- O'Connor played and started in 55 games a season ago and batted .342.
- He blasted 13 home runs and drove in 60 runs and scored 51 runs.
- O'Connor drove in a game-high 7 runs in a win over Saint Peter's (5/11).
- Sebastian Mueller was named to the 2023 MAAC All-Academic Team
- Mueller played in 56 games and made 55 starts as a junior
- In 225 at-bats just a season ago, Mueller had a batting average of .311.
- He hit 18 homers, to lead the team, and drove in 54 runs.
- Mueller went 4-for-7 and drove in a season high 8 runs in a win over Saint Peter's (5/11)
- The Bobcats return 23 players from last season's team.
- Sophomore Matt Alduino will be a key returner as he earned 2023 All-Rookie honors for his incredible campaign. Alduino led the team with a 4.50 ERA and 1.38 WHIP.
- Starting Pitchers, Mason Ulsh and Jimmy Hagan will also play a key role this season. Hagan will return to the mound after being shut down last season. Ulsh will look to play off his solid sophomore season.
- Other key returners include Braydon Seaburg, John Heitzman, Sean Swenson, Aaron Zenus, Matt DeRosa, Sam Favieri, Frank Craska, and Andrew Rubayo.
LOTS OF NEW FACES
- Quinnipiac welcomes 13 new faces to their campus this season.
- The Bobcats used the transfer portal to fill any openings and grabbed Dominick Proctor (Bryant and Stratton), CJ Willis (Western New England), Skyler Manelski (Linfield University), Jack Kabel (Nichols College), Gabe Wright (Indian River State College), Brett Leighton (Gettysburg), and Jack Gannon (Saint Peter's).
- Quinnipiac also brought in six first years, Spencer Chard (Newtown, Conn.), Kyle Garbowski (New Fairfield, Conn.), Raymond McNaught (East Bridgewater, Mass.), Andrew Hearn (Westfield, Mass.), James Fahan (Stamford, Conn.), and Sam Ametrano (Guilford, Conn.).
- The Bobcats will return home on Friday, April 12th as they welcome the NJIT Highlanders to Hamden for only the fifth meeting. The Bobcats and Highlanders will head to New Jersey for game two (Saturday, April 13th) before returning to Connecticut on Sunday (4/14) for the series finale.
