Volleyball Closes Out the Weekend With Win Over Pioneers

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac volleyball team returned to the win column after defeating Sacred Heart, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.
Leilani-kai Giusta and Yagmur Gunes led the offensive charge with 12 kills each in the four-set victory. Damla Gunes registered 43 assists in the effort.

SET ONE (25-20, Sacred Heart)
The Pioneers opened an 11-7 lead to begin the match before the Bobcats took their first timeout of the set.
Quinnipiac made it closer as they closed the gap to just two points, 21-19 before they called their final timeout of the set. Sacred Heart came out of the timeout and closed out the set, 25-20.
SET TWO (15-25)
The second set was a different story, with the Bobcats holding a 13-5 lead as the Pioneers called their first timeout of the second set.
The Bobcats continued to dominate the second set as they opened a 21-13 lead late in the set. After a Quinnipiac timeout, the Bobcats scored four of the next seven points to win the second set, 25-15.
SET THREE (20-25)
Sacred Heart came out in the third set and opened an 8-3 lead, forcing the Bobcats to call a timeout. After the Bobcats got within three, 10-7, the Pioneers called a timeout of their own.
Quinnipiac went on an 8-1 run out of the break to take a 15-12 lead and force Sacred Heart to use their second timeout. The Bobcats continued their pressure and closed out the third set on a 10-8 run.
SET FOUR (12-25)
With the Bobcats needing one more set for the win, they came out and established a 9-6 lead as they called their first timeout of the fourth set.
After the timeout, the Bobcats went on a 16-6 run to close out the set and match with a 25-12 victory in the fourth set.

The Bobcats will stay home next weekend, taking on Manhattan (10/12) and Iona (10/13) in Hamden.

- The Bobcats had 7.0 total blocks, while Sacred Heart had 10.0 blocks.
- Quinnipiac dominated the service line with nine aces in the victory over the Pioneers.
- Damla Gunes recorded 43 assists in the effort.
