Bobcats Dominate in Sweep Over Niagara in MAAC Opener

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac women's volleyball delivered in its home opener, downing Niagara in straight sets to open MAAC play inside of Burt Kahn Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Yagmur Gunes led the Bobcats with 15 kills and 12 digs for a double-double, while Damla added 34 assists and 11 digs of her own. Leilani-kai Giusta contributed 12 kills and eight digs in the victory.
With the win, Quinnipiac improved to 5-5 overall on the season and 1-0 in MAAC play, while Niagara fell to 1-8 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

SET ONE (25-18, QU)
Niagara got off to a hot start, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. However, Quinnipiac responded with a 12-4 run to take a 15-12 lead in the opening set at the media timeout. Out of the break, QU went on a 4-1 run, forcing a Niagara timeout with the Bobcats leading 19-13.
The lead proved to be too much for Niagara as the Bobcats took the first set 25-18.
SET TWO (26-24)
The two sides traded points to an 8-8 tie before Niagara crept ahead to an 11-8 lead, forcing Quinnipiac to call a timeout. Out of the break in action, Quinnipiac responded with a 7-3 run to take a 15-14 lead in the set. The two sides traded points to an 18-18 tie in the set before Niagara crept out ahead at 20-18, forcing the Bobcats to use their final timeout of the set.
Out of the timeout, Quinnipiac went on a 3-1 run to tie the set at 21-21, forcing Niagara to use its first timeout. Out of the timeout, the two sides traded points to a 24-24 tie in the set before a kill from Leilani-kai Giusta kill pushed the Bobcats ahead 25-24 before Niagara called its final timeout of the set.
Out of the break, Giusta scored a kill to secure the set victory for the Bobcats!
SET THREE (25-14)
The two sides traded points to a 3-3 tie before Quinnipiac went on a 4-0 run to take a 7-3 lead, forcing a Niagara timeout. The Bobcats extended the lead to 15-9 before Niagara burned its final timeout of the set. The Purple Eagles were never able to recover, as the Bobcats cruised to the eventual set and match win.

The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 17, when the Bobcats play host to Canisius at 1 p.m. inside of Burt Kahn Gym.
