HAMDEN, Conn. – Behind two homers and three RBIs from Anthony Donofrio, the Quinnipiac baseball team closed its non-conference slate with a 7-6 victory over in-state foe Sacred Heart Tuesday afternoon at the QU Baseball Field.

With the win, the Bobcats improved 25-24 overall on the season, while the Pioneers fell to 23-27 on the 2023 campaign with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers struck first for a run in the opening frame off a solo homer from Sam Mongelli to take an early 1-0 lead. Trailing 3-0 in the fourth, Quinnipiac got on the board in the inning after Sebastian Mueller lined a solo homer over the fence to trim the deficit to 3-1.

The Bobcats trimmed the deficit to one in the sixth after Anthony Donofrio blasted a solo homer to right to bring the score to 3-2. Later in the inning with runners on second and third, Braydon Seaburg skied a sac-fly to left to score Kyle Maves from third to knot the contest at 3-3.

The following inning, with a runner on second Jared Zimbardo lined an RBI single to right to give the Bobcats their first lead of the day at 4-3. The next at-bat, Donofrio lined a two-run homer to straightaway center to extend the lead to 6-3 in the seventh.

The Pioneers added two runs in the eighth, but it wasn't enough, as the Bobcats held on for the 7-6 victory.

The Bobcats will be back in action on Thursday, May 18, when QU travels to take on Siena in the opening game of a three-game series to close the regular season
First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
