HAMDEN, Conn. – Matt DeRosa and Jared Zimbardo each homered, as the Quinnipiac baseball team fell short in the middle game of the weekend series against Iona, 9-6, Saturday afternoon at the QU Baseball Field.

With the loss, the Bobcats fell to 12-19 overall on the season and 6-6 in the MAAC, while the Gaels improved to 7-24 on the 2023 campaign and 3-5 in the MAAC with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0 in the third, the Bobcats got on the board after Matt DeRosa and Jared Zimbardo blasted back-to-back solo homers to put Quinnipiac ahead 2-1 in the frame. Quinnipiac added another run the following inning after Matt Tesoriero scored on a DeRosa sacrifice bunt to extend the lead to 3-1.

However, Iona responded with four runs of their own in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.

With Quinnipiac trailing 6-3 in the sixth, Sean Swenson came through with a pinch-hit RBI double to trim the deficit to 6-4. However, it wasn't enough as the Gaels held on for the eventual 9-6 victory over the Bobcats.
