QU Splits Doubleheader at South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C.-- The Quinnipiac softball team split a doubleheader on the road at South Carolina State on Saturday, March 11. The Bobcats dropped a heartbreaker in the first game, losing 3-2 on the final play of the matchup. The Bobcats and Lady Bulldogs forced extra innings in game one of their doubleheader, going scoreless through seven innings the first runs of the afternoon were tallied in the eighth frame. QU bounced back in the second game, dominating the Lady Bulldogs 7-1. The Bobcats entered the second matchup on a mission and tallied four runs in the first inning. Adding two more in the next frame and their final run in the top of the fifth, the Bobcats kenneled the Bulldogs in a 7-1 victory.

Game one
Eighth inning-
- With Natalia Apatiga placed on second, Amanda Engel flied out to right to bring Bridget Nasir up to bat. Nasir reached on a throwing error by the pitcher which advanced Apatiga to third. Nasir stole second base before Julia Woeste flied out to left field and gave Apatiga the chance to cross Homeplate.
- In the bottom of the eighth frame A groundout from K. Leslie advanced T. Alexander into scoring territory. Alexander was brought home on the next at bat as A. Felder singled up the middle.
Ninth inning-
- The Bobcats were determined in the ninth inning when Hannah Davis scored on a groundout from Ally Hochstadter at first base.
- The Lady Bulldogs secured the victory in dramatic fashion as the last two plays of the game were scoring runs. With T. Ware placed at second, M. Boyd stole second to advance Ware to a scoring position at third, after Boyd's bunt single. J. Hendricks struck out looking and D. Lowther grounded out to shortstop but not before T. Ware was brought home. The final play of the night was a double to left field from D. Calloway to push Boyd across Homeplate.
NOTES
- Mary Fogg knotched three hits on five at bats.
- Julia Woeste and Sofia Vega each had one RBI through nine innings.
- Jackie Gonzalez pitched eight innings and struck out five players during that time.
- Gonzalez allowed only one hit and one run.
Game two
First inning-
- After being walked on the first at bat Mary Fogg stole second, followed by a Brooke Hilliard single up the middle that pushed Fogg home. Apatiga's single to center field and advance on the throw put Hilliard into scoring position at third. Engel singled to left and added two more runs to the board. The last scoring play of the inning was Nasir's single and advance on a throwing error by the pitcher to give Engel time and space to run home.
Second inning-
- Hilliard singled down the right field line and scored Sofia Vega, unearned after a fielding error and a Mary Fogg single had runners on second and third.
- Apatiga flied out to right on a sacrifice play to bring Fogg home and the score to 6-0 Bobcats.
Fifth Inning-
- QU wasn't done yet as Engel singled and Nasir doubled to left field pushing Engel home for their seventh run of the night.
- The Lady Bulldogs pushed back in the bottom of the fifth to ruin QU's shutout when T. Alexander doubled to center and then advanced to third on K. Nelson's groundout to shortstop. A single from A. Felder scored Alexander before a pop up from M. Marshall ended the inning.
NOTES:
- Brooke Hilliard tallied one run, two hits and two RBI's through four at bats.
- Amanda Engel and Bridget Nasir both had two RBI's and two hits through four at bats.
- Engel also had two runs on the night.
- Sydney Horan pitched seven innings, allowing only two hits, one run and recorded five strikeouts.
