Cooke Nets Two Goals in Season Opener, Bobcats Down Leopards

Cooke, Scott score in 3-0 win over Lafayette
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's soccer team opened the 2021 season with a 3-0 victory over the Lafayette Leopards. Sophomore Rebecca Cooke and junior Olivia Scott scored in the shutout win. This was the Bobcats' third-straight win to open a season campaign and second season-opening shutout in the last three years.
The MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, Rebecca Cooke, netted two goals in the victory. Junior center back Olivia Scott scored the Bobcats' first goal of the year in the third minute of the game. Junior keeper Meaghan Phillips tallied her first shutout win of the 2021 season and eighth of her career.

First Half
- (3' – Quinnipiac 1, Lafayette 0): The Bobcats earned a free kick approximately 10 yards outside of the 18-yard box. Senior Selena Salas chipped a ball up into the box and found junior Olivia Scott, who headed it past the Lafayette keeper to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
- (47' – Quinnipiac 2, Lafayette 0): Quinnipiac came out firing in the second half. First-year Anna Costello found first-year Madison Mandleur on the left flank. Mandleur sent a long ball from the left side to Cooke making a run up the middle of the Bobcats' attacking third. Cooke sent the ball past Lafayette's Natalie Neumann to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead.
- (48' – Quinnipiac 3, Lafayette 0): Quickly after netting her first goal of the year, Cooke found the back of the net again inside the box. Junior Markela Bejleri won the ball back outside of the box on the right side and sent in a cross to Cooke on the back post. Cooke one touch and drilled it past Neumann to seal the Bobcats' 3-0 victory.
- The Bobcats out-shot the Leopards 15-4 with nine shots on goal.
- Cooke scored her fifth and sixth goals of her career and first two this season. She led the team with five shots on the day.
- Scott scored her first goal of the season and fifth of her career.
- First-years Costello and Mandleur tallied their first career points as Bobcats with one assist each.
- Salas recorded an assist in the 3-0 victory and 10th of her career.
- Phillips made two saves in the net and notched her first shutout of the season.
- Quinnipiac tallied 17 fouls, while Lafayette had 10.
- The Bobcats dominated in the offensive third, earning 10 corner kicks and allowing just one for the Leopards.
- The Bobcats will face the Yale Bulldogs on Sunday, August 29 at 12 p.m. at home.
