Bobcats Dominate Bulldogs in 4-0 Shutout Win

Four Bobcats Score, Phillips tallies second shutout
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's soccer team defeated the Yale Bulldogs in dominating fashion at home on Sunday, Aug. 29. The Bobcats tallied a 4-0 shutout victory against the Bulldogs and improved to 2-0 to start the 2021 season. This was the first win against Yale in Quinnipiac women's soccer's program history.
Four different Bobcats scored goals in the first half, and junior Meaghan Phillips tallied her second shutout in a row. Sophomores Courtney Chochol and Rebecca Cooke and seniors Emily Loney and Selena Salas tallied goals in the win. Quinnipiac has scored seven goals in its first two games this season, which is the most goals scored in the first two games of the season on record. Before today, the best start for the Bobcats offensively was in 2005 where the team notched five goals through its first two games.

SCORING SUMMARY
First Half
- (1' – Quinnipiac 1, Yale 0): The Bobcats jumped to a quick start with a goal by senior Selena Salas. Sophomore Courtney Chochol played a cross into the box and found sophomore Rebecca Cooke. Cooke's first touch went backwards to the edge of the box, and Salas was there to hit it home first time past Yale's Annie Welch.
- (11' – Quinnipiac 2, Yale 0): Chochol gave the Bobcats a 2-0 lead about 10 minutes later with her first goal of the season. She turned and beat a Yale defender at the top of the box and hit a rocket to the top right corner of the goal.
- (14' – Quinnipiac 3, Yale 0): Junior Markela Bejleri intercepted coming from Yale's back line and then found Cooke making a short diagonal run into the 18-yard box. Cooke tapped the ball past Welch to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead.
- (31' – Quinnipiac 3, Yale 0): Senior Emily Loney tallied the fourth goal of the game in the 31st minute of the first half. She stole the ball from the Yale center back and scored a beautiful goal with her left foot to the right side of the goal.
- The Bobcats scored four goals in the first half of the game, which was the most first-half goals scored since Sept. 4, 2016 in a 6-2 win against Delaware State.
- Quinnipiac's four goals in today's victory are the most scored against any Ivy League opponent in program history.
- This was the first shutout win over not only Yale, but also any Ivy League opponent.
- The last win against an Ivy League opponent (Dartmouth) was on Sept. 17, 2010.
- This was Quinnipiac's first win over Yale.
- The team's four goals scored are the most in a game since 2018 in a 4-3 overtime win over UMass Lowell.
- Salas scored the first goal 39 seconds into the game. This was the fasted goal scored since Jess Fontaine found the back of the net just 1:25 into play against Maine on Sept. 13, 2015. Before that, the Bobcats' last goal scored within the first two minutes of play came back on Sept. 30, 2011 as Furtuna Velaj scored at 1:57 in a 4-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson.
- Four different Bobcats tallied goals in the shutout win over the Bulldogs.
- Cooke scored her third goal of the year and third in just two games played. She has seven points on three goals and one assist this season. This is also her second multi-point game (1g, 1a) this season and fourth of her career.
- Salas, Chochol and Loney all netted their first goals of the season. Both Salas and Chochol have three points on the year with one goal and one assist each.
- Bejleri has tallied two assists through her first two games this year.
- Salas and Chochol led the team with two shots on goal against Yale.
- Phillips made five saves and earned her second shutout of the season and ninth of her career.
- The Bobcats out shot the Bulldogs, 15-12 with 12 shots on goal.
- Yale's Annie Welch made eight saves, and the Bulldogs earned eight corner kicks, compared to Quinnipiac's six.
- On Wednesday, Sept. 1, the Bobcats will host UAlbany at 4 p.m. for a MAAC and America East matchup.
