HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball is back in action this weekend for the first time since April 14 as the Bobcats are in Buffalo, N.Y., to face the Canisius Golden Griffins at the Demske Sports Complex in a pair of doubleheaders Sunday and Monday.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac was swept in a doubleheader at Fairfield on April 14, falling 2-1 and 5-2, to the Stags in a hard-fought matchup. The Bobcats held leads in both games before the Stags had late rallies in both end of the doubleheader to come away with wins.
Scouting Canisius
Canisius is tied for sixth in the MAAC standings with 11 wins in the 2021 season and most recently split its four-game series with Rider last weekend. The Golden Griffins are led offensively by Vinny Chiarenza with a .375 batting average in all 20 games as well as a team-leading six home runs, 16 RBIs, 24 hits, 19 runs scored and 14 walks. Three hitters are battingn over .300. Canisius has a team ERA of 4.15 while four relievers have under a 3.00 ERA. Will Frank leads all starters with a 2-1 record, 3.24 ERA and 24 strikeouts while Ryan Boyer has a team-leading 26 strikeouts along with a 2-1 record and 4.19 ERA.
All-Time vs. Canisius
Quinnipiac is 7-12 all-time against Canisius dating back to the first meeting between the two programs in 2014. The Bobcats snapped a four-game losing streak against the Golden Griffins with a win in their last meeting in Hamden on April 7, 2019, in 10 innings, 10-9. This is Quinnipiac's first trip to Buffalo since April 2018.
Andre the Giant
Andre Marrero has had a stellar season at the dish for the Bobcats as he leads the team with a .344 batting average, 22 hits, five home runs, 18 RBIs, and 16 runs scored as well as a .439 on base percentage, .641 slugging percentage and 1.080 OPS. Marrero is four RBIs from reaching 100 in his career while he ranks in the top 10 in Division I program history with 123 runs scored, 41 doubles, seven triples, 36 stolen bases and 82 walks.
Evan Almighty
Evan Vulgamore enters the weekend tied for the Division I program record with 132 RBIs and ranks fifth all-time in program history. He has 16 RBIs this season to go with a .297 batting average, 19 hits, two home runs, five doubles and 11 runs scored.
Taking a Chance
Sam LaChance had a pair of singles in the front end of the twinbill at Fairfield to give him 10 hits this season. He has scored seven runs and driven in five RBIs in 15 games.
Mueller, Mueller
Sebastian Mueller recorded a hit and RBI in the doubleheader to up his batting average to .264 with 14 hits this season as well as six RBIs and seven runs scored.
Cherry Garcia
Brandyn Garcia has been the Bobcats top pitcher this season as he owns a 3.09 ERA in five appearances and four starts, striking out 28 batters in 23.1 innings. He struck out nine in 5.1 innings in his last start against Siena on April 9.
The Last Airbender
Colton Bender ranks third on the team with a .303 batting average and is one of two with 20 hits this season, trailing only Marrero's 22. Bender also is second with three home runs and 13 runs scored, and third with 13 RBIs.
