HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team continues its 10-game road swing this weekend as the Bobcats are at Niagara to take on the Purple Eagles in a four-game series at Bobo Field with doubleheaders beginning at 12 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac went 1-3 against the Rider Broncs last weekend, snapping a six-game skid with a win in the final game of the weekend series. The Bobcats were competitive in three of the four games over the weekend, holding a lead or forcing a tie, but could only come away with the one win.
Scouting Niagara
The Purple Eagles enter the weekend with a 4-4 record on the season after taking three of four games at Siena last weekend. Niagara previously lost three of four games at Rider. This weekend is the first at Bobo Field since the 2019 season. Cole Tucker leads the team with a .450 batting average while Benny Serrano has a team-high 10 hits and six runs scored to go with four stolen bases. Dawson Bailey has hit two home runs while Peter Battaglia has three extra-base hits and five RBIs. Zach Cameron has been the go-to option out of the bullpen, not allowing an earned run in three appearances and striking out five in 7.2 innings. Three starts have made two a start in each weekend, highlighted by Jacob Bruning with seven strikeouts in nine innings.
All-Time vs. Niagara
Quinnipiac is 10-5 all-time against Niagara in 15 meetings since joining the MAAC in the 2014 season. The Bobcats have won each of the last two series between the two teams, including a sweep of their series at Bobo Field in 2019.
All Hail Hagan
Jimmy Hagan earned his first career win in his first career start at Rider on March 27 as he tossed 6.1 scoreless innings and scattered five hits against the Broncs. Hagan struck out three batters in the impressive effort. He is tied for eighth in the MAAC in innings pitched.
Ice Cream Kohn
Michael Kohn had hits in all four games at Rider as he went 7 for 15 and blasted a home run for his first long ball of the season on Sunday. Kohn came around to score his first three runs of the season and drove in three RBIs for the Bobcats. He is now batting .304 on the season.
On the Lutz
Dylan Lutz had hits in three of four games, going 6 for 13 and now has at least one hit in six of eight games to start the season. Lutz also went deep with his first home run of the season in the win at Rider, going 3 for 4 with four RBIs. He now has six RBIs on the season and is batting .423 this season, going 11 for 26 at the plate. Lutz ranks third in the MAAC with 11 hits, ninth with a .500 on base percentage and 10th in batting average.
The Last AirBender
Colton Bender also had hits in three of four games, and has a hit in six of eight games to open the season. Bender scored three runs on the weekend and drove in two RBIs. He has an impressive .321 batting average so far as he has gone 9 for 28 and scored six runs.
Very Vulgy
Evan Vulgamore had his 11-game hitting streak come to an end in game two of Saturday's doubleheader as he was held hitless for the first time since the 2020 season. Vulgamore went 4 for 14 down at Rider, and still managed a double, two runs and two RBIs. He boasts a .385 batting average and is one double from recording the 40th double of his Quinnipiac career. Vulgamore is third in the MAAC with a .731 slugging percentage, tied for seventh with 10 hits, and tied for fifth with seven runs scored. He is also tied for third with two home runs and first with three doubles.
Marrero Magic
Andre Marrero went 3 for 7 in the Saturday doubleheader at Rider and launched his first home run of the season for the Bobcats. He scored two runs and drove in three RBIs along with drawing two walks. He already has six walks to go with seven hits for a .406 on base percentage. Marrero is tied for sixth in the MAAC with seven RBIs this season.
Hard Seitter
Kevin Seitter made his first start of the season and shined for the Bobcats in the second game of last Friday's doubleheader at Rider. He struck out six batters over four scoreless innings, and scattered three hits and three walks. Seitter has yet to allow a run in seven innings and has struck out 11 batters in his two appearances. He is tied for eighth in the MAAC in strikeouts.
Brandyn's Dealing
Brandyn Garcia took a hard-luck loss in the opening game of the weekend at Rider as he allowed just two runs on two hits over six innings but he Bobcats came up short in a 2-1 loss. Garcia has allowed two hits in each of his first two starts, and has struck out 12 batters in 12 innings of work. He ranks among the MAAC's best through two weekends as he has the lowest opponent batting average at .103, fourth with a 1.50 ERA and tied for third with 12 strikeouts. He is also third with 12 innings pitched.
