HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team is on the road this weekend for a pair of games against the Villanova Wildcats on Saturday and Sunday with both games beginning at 12 p.m. at the Villanova Field Hockey Field.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac opened the 2020-21 season in style as the Bobcats defeated the Providence Friars, 2-1, in a thriller for the first game in nearly 500 days. Olivia Howard had a goal and an assist, and Julianna Cappello scored the game-winning goal with 5:21 remaining in the fourth quarter. Nina Santore made five saves in goal.
Scouting Villanova
Villanova enters the weekend with a 1-5 record overall and in BIG EAST play. The Wildcats opened the season with five straight losses, including weekend sweeps at Liberty and Old Dominion, before falling at home against Temple, 1-0. Villanova avenged the loss to the Owls on March 7 as it traveled across town and came up with a 2-1 win in overtime. Five different players have scored one goal each and Emily Clarke leads the way with three points.
All-Time vs. Villanova
The Bobcats are 2-4 all-time against the Wildcats dating back to the first meeting between the two teams in 2006. Quinnipiac has lost three straight games with Villanova, all by a 2-1 margin. The Bobcats defeated the Wildcats, 5-2, in their first meeting as BIG EAST foes.
Weekly Awards
Nina Santore earned BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors for the Bobcats, becoming just the third Quinnipiac rookie since joining the BIG EAST for the 2016 season to win the league's rookie of the week. Julianna Cappello was the last to do so, winning the honor after the final week of the 2019 regular season.
Winner, Winner
The Bobcats' win over the Friars was their first against Providence in seven all-time meetings. Quinnipiac had lost the first six meetings, including four one-goal losses, before coming away with the 2-1 win on Friday. It was also Quinnipiac's first win in a season-opener since August 24, 2012 at Holy Cross.
Oh My, Olivia
Olivia Howard recorded her first career three-point game as she had a goal and an assist in the win. Howard scored the first goal of the season before assisting Julianna Cappello's game-winner. Howard had a goal and an assist in her entire rookie season in 2019.
Capping off the Win
Julianna Cappello scored the game-winning goal in Friday's victory for the Bobcats, her second career game-winner after ending the 2019 season with the game-winner in double overtime against Temple on Nov. 1. Cappello now has seven goals in her young Quinnipiac career.
Santore Strong
Nina Santore shined between the pipes for the Bobcats as she stopped five of the six shots she faced, including all four in the first period. Santore's efforts between the pipes led the Bobcats to the win.
Halley's Helper
Jess Halley assisted Howard's goal to pick up her first point of the 2020-21 campaign. Halley played all 60 minutes and now has five assists in her career.
Hello, Bobcats
Five different Bobcats made their Quinnipiac debuts in Friday's season opener. Sophomore Gabby Herschell saw the field for the first time, also making her first career start. First year Nina Santore's start in goal was the first of her career, and the only first year to start. Emiline Biggin, Bevan Gebhardt and Samantha Dugan also saw the field for the first time for the Bobcats, coming off the bench.
