HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team is headed back down south for a second straight weekend as the Bobcats are set for a three-game series at James Madison beginning Friday at 3 p.m. against the Dukes.
Scouting James Madison
The Dukes enter the weekend with a 1-3 record after they were swept in a three-game series at No. 16 NC State in the opening weekend before picking up a midweek victory at Richmond on Tuesday. James Madison exploded for 12 runs against the Spiders on Tuesday for its first win of the season, outscoring its first three games against the Wolf Pack. Chase DeLauter leads the dukes with a .500 batting average through four games as he is 8 for 16 with seven RBIs while four different Dukes are batting over .300. Fox Semones leads the team with two home runs and five runs scored. Justin Showalter leads the team among starters with a 2.25 ERA while Friday starter Nick Stewart leads the team with eight strikeouts.
All-Time vs. James Madison
Quinnipiac is 2-3 all-time against James Madison dating back to 1978 in their first meeting with the Dukes. James Madison picked up the win in that first matchup, 8-3, before the two teams split a four-game series back in 2015. The Bobcats won the pair of games in the doubleheader of that four-game series with the Dukes taking the Friday and Sunday games.
Showing Patience
Dylan Lutz reached base four times in the three-game series at UTSA to lead the Bobcats as he singled and walked three times, as well as stealing two bases and scoring a run. Lutz stole two bases in the season opener for his first career two-stolen base game and has reached bases in all three games so far.
Colton's Cool
Colton Bender ended the series on a positive note as he singled twice to go 2 for 3 and picked up a run and an RBI. Bender had ended the 2019 season on a 10-game hitting streak but he was held hitless in the opener.
Ready for Lift Off
Evan Vulgamore blasted his first home run of the season in the second game of the year for the Bobcats lone long ball in the opening weekend. Vulgamore's home run was the 21st of his career as he is seventh in Division I program history and is just outside the top 10 all-time in program history.
Dr. Dre
Andre Marrero reached base three times in the opening weekend as he drew a pair of walks in the opening game and singled later in the series.
Nico's Back
Christian Nicolosi was the Bobcats top starter over the weekend as he struck out five batters in the opening day start. Despite taking the loss, Nicolosi allowed just one run on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. Friday was his first start since April 13, 2019 and jus the seventh of his career in 30 appearances.
Money Mahoney
Connor Mahoney was among the Bobcats top arms out of the bullpen in the opening weekend as he pitched two scoreless innings in the season opener, striking out a pair of batters and allowing just one hit. Mahoney's appearance was the 13th of his career and first since April 13, 2019 at La Salle.
Bullpen Success
Quinnipiac's bullpen was solid in the opening weekend as it allowed just five earned runs in just over 13 innings of work and struck out nine batters. The bullpen allowed just two earned runs in the first two games of the season, keeping the Bobcats in the game despite not being able to put across many runs.
